Short Term Language Exchange - University of Duisburg-Essen (July)

Creative inspiration between Rhine and Ruhr: the University of Duisburg-Essen (DUE) is located in the European region with the highest density of institutions of higher learning. Created in 2003 by the merger of the universities of Duisburg and Essen, DUE is the youngest university in North Rhine-Westphalia and one of the ten largest universities in Germany. With its 12 departments and more than 39,000 students, the University of Duisburg-Essen is among the 10 largest German universities. Many international students study at the University of Duisburg-Essen and give the cities of Duisburg and Essen an international atmosphere.
Consisting of intensive German language lessons as well as cultural and social activities, students will gain credit towards their Macquarie award program and enhance their language skills during this three-week language immersion program.

This course is for Macquarie's intermediate and advanced German studies students only: students studying GMN at 200 or 300 level at Macquarie. The course is taught entirely in German utilising modern teaching methods and one-on-one advice. Approximately 100 hours of lessons will include a focus on: oral communication, listening comprehension, reading comprehension, vocabulary, text production, pronunciation, and grammar.

Accommodation: Participants will be accommodated in the Bildungshotel Essen (Bfz Essen) about a 10 minute walk from the University. Students are to check-in from 2pm on 2 July 2017 and check-out by 10am on 22 July 2017. Students will stay in single rooms. Double bedrooms are not available. Meals are not provided.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this program, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Enrolled into an undergraduate degree at Macquarie University
  • Students must have minimum GPA 2.0 out of 4.0 at time of assessment
  • Completed a minimum 12 credit points at MQ at time of assessment
  • Satisfy other criteria specified in the Student Exchange Policy.

Important notes:

Logistics Fee: Successful applicants will be required to pay a logistics fee of $920 (to be finalised). This fee will cover: Accommodation at Bfz Hotel, State public transport ticket (within North-Rhein-Westphalia from the first day of classes until the last), Entrance and guide fees for excursions etc., Support from DUE’s international office, Library and Wi-Fi access on campus.

Program Costs: You remain enrolled at Macquarie University and continue to pay your tuition fees to Macquarie University. As an exchange student you pay no tuition fees to host university. However, you must also always be prepared for unexpected expenses, and should consider how you will be dealing with the expenses of your exchange before you leave your home country. Prior to departure, you will need to save sufficient funds to cover all of your expenses for the duration of your exchange. Some costs to consider include: airfares, students visa (if required), travel health insurance, accommodation, food, additional travel, entertainment, textbooks, incidental expense. If you wish to work while you are away, it is important to note that work rights for international students vary from country to country.
