The University of Antwerp is one of the major Belgian Universities and is a young, dynamic and forward-thinking university. Moreover, it offers internationally accredited academic teaching based on scientific research. The city of Antwerp is a real innovation hub with many start-up centres so students who have business ideas and are looking for ways to get it started are making the correct choice with Antwerp. Examples are The Beacon (off-campus) and Take-Off Antwerp (on-campus).

Antwerp is a vibrant student city, home to +40,000 students and the campus is located in the heart of the city centre hence its' nickname of "City University" as well as being home to the second-largest port in Europe and the world centre for Diamond trade. Antwerp is also home to the largest chocolate museum in the world!

Students who attend the Spring Semester (February-June), are able to attend the University of Antwerp's I-week on Sustainability as part of their exchange curriculum. This is a unique conference-style course where students receive lectures and workshops from world-class professionals on sustainability in many different aspects. 

Every semester, The University of Antwerp offers about 160 ECTS worth English-taught courses and students are also permitted to take two courses from other faculties (which means that the amount of English-taught courses students can choose from is close to to 300 ECTS semester. The University of Antwerp's latest addition is 18ECTS worth of courses on data science.

Accommodation

University of Antwerp Housing

The University of Antwerp's house is reasonably priced given the proximity and availability of accommodation close to the campus (99% of students are located in accommodation within 10 minutes of walking distance to our campus) ​

TransportAntwerp Central Train Station has begun services of overnight trains (eg. between Antwerp and Vienna) and due to Antwerp's central location in Europe, students are able to explore Europe in a very quick and efficient way.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this program, you must meet the following criteria:

  • A WAM of 60 or higher (varies each program),
  • Completion of at least 40cp at the time of application. 60cp to go abroad,
  • Enough credit points remaining to complete the program,
  • Meet English language requirements for non-native speakers,
  • Comply with the eligibility criteria outlined in the Student Exchange Policy.

Important notes:

Application Fee and Payment Options: For all exchange programs (semester and short term), there is a compulsory application fee. For more information and payment options please refer to the Payment Website.

Insurance: It is a requirement of the exchange program that all students must purchase their own travel insurance to cover them for the duration of their journey beyond their overseas program. Students will be covered throughout the duration of their exchange  program dates. More information will be given to students upon acceptance.

Program Costs: You remain enrolled at Macquarie University and continue to pay your tuition fees to Macquarie University. As an exchange student you pay no tuition fees to host university. However, you must also always be prepared for unexpected expenses, and should consider how you will be dealing with the expenses of your exchange before you leave your home country. Prior to departure, you will need to save sufficient funds to cover all of your expenses for the duration of your exchange. Some costs to consider include: airfares, students visa (if required), travel health insurance, accommodation, food, additional travel, entertainment, textbooks, incidental expense. If you wish to work while you are away, it is important to note that work rights for international students vary from country to country. For further information about your visa restrictions please contact the consulate or embassy of your host country.
