From hot air ballooning and music to Dal and crime novels, this city has festival fever 12 months in a year.

Exchange students like yourself will have access to outstanding teaching in world-class facilities. Popular subject areas include humanities, STEM, politics, business, economics and sociology. Besides academics, there'll be plenty for you to enjoy on-campus as well. The University of Bristol has over 300 societies ranging from Skydiving and Capoeira to Space Exploration and Quidditch. There are also over 50 sports clubs for you to choose from. In the 2020-2021 academic year, the university is introducing a Global Lounge where incoming students from around the world will get to participate in speed-friending, a Pan-African festival, language cafes, tours, trips to various UK destinations and much more!

Course Information

For subjects not studied at MQ, Bristol recommends first-year units. Second-year units are most common for students taking their major/minor abroad, and third-year units are suitable for students in their major subject if they are close to graduation. Bristol recommends that students take at least 50% of units in their major subject. Please note, Psychology is taught as an experimental science rather than a social science at Bristol. Students taking Psychology units are required to have a strong background in Chemistry, Biology and Neuroscience.

Law not available for semester exchange.
Film / theatre is limited to 1st year subjects for students with cognate majors.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this program, you must:

  • Not enrolled in a PG degree,
  • Not wish to do Media or Education units on exchange,
  • A WAM of 70 or higher (varies each program),
  • Completion of at least 40cp at the time of application. 60cp to go abroad,
  • Enough credit points remaining to complete the program,
  • Comply with the eligibility criteria outlined in the Student Exchange Policy,
  • Be nominated by Macquarie University,
  • Have proficiency in English for non-native English speakers.

Important notes:

Application Fee and Payment Options: For all exchange programs (semester and short term), there is a compulsory application fee. For more information and payment options please refer to the Payment Website.

Insurance: It is a requirement of the exchange program that all students must purchase their own travel insurance to cover them for the duration of their journey beyond their overseas program. Students will be covered throughout the duration of their exchange program dates. More information will be given to students upon acceptance.

Program Costs: You remain enrolled at Macquarie University and continue to pay your tuition fees to Macquarie University. As an exchange student you pay no tuition fees to host university. However, you must also always be prepared for unexpected expenses, and should consider how you will be dealing with the expenses of your exchange before you leave your home country. Prior to departure, you will need to save sufficient funds to cover all of your expenses for the duration of your exchange. Some costs to consider include: airfares, students visa (if required), travel health insurance, accommodation, food, additional travel, entertainment, textbooks, incidental expense. If you wish to work while you are away, it is important to note that work rights for international students vary from country to country. For further information about your visa restrictions please contact the consulate or embassy of your host country.
