Beijing Normal University, a key university under the administration of the Ministry of Education, is a renowned institution of higher education known for teacher education, education science and basic learning in both the arts and the sciences.

Among the national key universities built during the time of China’s Seventh and Eighth Five-Year Plans, Beijing Normal University is acknowledged as one of the nation’s first ten key universities. The school entered into the first “211 Project” Construction Program during the time of the Ninth Five-Year Plan. On the occasion of the 2002 Centennial Celebration, the Ministry of Education and Beijing Municipality said they attached great importance to collaboration in the development of Beijing Normal University. The Ninth Congress of the Communist Party of China in Beijing listed Beijing Normal University as among the institutions it was supporting to become world-class universities. Over the Tenth Five-Year Plan period, the university was listed on the nation’s “985 Project” Construction program.

The main campus (North Taipingzhuang Campus) of Beijing Normal University covers 172.64 acres that serve as an important place for the university to carry out educational activities. The school has 22,000 full-time students, including 8,900 undergraduates, 11,300 graduates and 1,800 long-term international students. The campus has 1 education faculty, 22 schools and colleges, 2 departments and 36 research institutes (centers). The library boasts over 4.1 million volumes and some 17,300 GB of digital resources, with 1,400 GB e-books.

Citizenship Eligibility: Due to a new regulation applied, Beijing Normal University no longer accept Chinese Citizens as exchange students. Students with other citizenship (incl. Australian citizenship) have an advantage in the shortlisting process. For candidates with Chinese citizenship, we encourage you to apply to universities in other Asian countries.

Course Information: The course information of 2018 Spring (Session 1, 2018 in Macquarie University) is not available yet, please refer to the 2017 Spring Course List as a reference.

Currently, only the School of Business offers undergraduate units. For all other Schools, the units available in English will be at postgraduate level. However, BNU advised that these units should be manageable if you are a junior or senior year student at Macquarie. Please refer to more course information below:

Meanwhile, BNU's College of Chinese Language & Culture offers Chinese language units of different levels (from beginners to advanced level). Students will be placed into different classes after the placement test. Please refer to this file for course information.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this program, you must:

  • With a non-Chinese Citizenship
  • A cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher (varies each program), 
  • Completion of at least 12cp at the time of application. 18cp to go abroad, 
  • Enough credit points remaining to complete the program, 
  • Comply with the eligibility criteria outlined in the Student Exchange Policy.

Important notes:

Application Fee and Payment Options: For all exchange programs (semester and short term), there is a compulsory application fee. For more information and payment options please refer to the Cost and Funding Website.

Insurance: It is a requirement of the exchange program that all students must purchase their own travel insurance to cover them for the duration of their entire journey overseas. More information will be given to students upon acceptance.

Program Costs: You remain enrolled at Macquarie University and continue to pay your tuition fees to Macquarie University. As an exchange student you pay no tuition fees to host university. However, you must also always be prepared for unexpected expenses, and should consider how you will be dealing with the expenses of your exchange before you leave your home country. Prior to departure, you will need to save sufficient funds to cover all of your expenses for the duration of your exchange. Some costs to consider include: airfares, students visa (if required), travel health insurance, accommodation, food, additional travel, entertainment, textbooks, incidental expense. If you wish to work while you are away, it is important to note that work rights for international students vary from country to country. For further information about your visa restrictions please contact the consulate or embassy of your host country.
