Get the information you need to have meaningful conversations with your teenager and help them make the right decisions for their future.
Turning their interests into a career is something your child can start thinking about from as early as Year 10, but it can be difficult to know where to begin.
As a parent or carer, you can start the conversation by:
- asking them about what they enjoy and what they’d like to do after school
- gathering information about courses that will allow them to develop their passions.
Your child’s journey to university
Year 10
1. Plan HSC subject selection. To enter university, your child will need to qualify to receive an ATAR.
2. Discuss the value of extracurricular courses in senior years. They can help your child qualify for early entry.
3. Apply for Macquarie’s Gifted and Talented early entry program, if your child is eligible.
Year 11
1. Talk to your child about the importance of doing well in Year 11, as Year 11 results are assessed for early entry offers through the Schools Recommendation Scheme and Macquarie Leaders and Achievers early entry scheme.
2. Research available degrees and universities. Speak to your child’s career adviser for ideas.
3. Invite your child to attend uni open days, info sessions and career expos together.
Year 12
1. Ensure your child is aware of application dates and deadlines, as well as any relevant entry schemes and their requirements.
2. Encourage your child to apply for scholarships and early entry schemes.
3. Attend uni events and take a campus tour together.
4. Shortlist preferred degrees and discuss alternative entry pathways if your child doesn’t get an offer for their preferred course.
