Students come to Macquarie from different places and stages in their lives. In 2017, nearly half of our commencing students joined us directly from high school or following a gap year. Others commenced their studies after gaining valuable work and life experience. Nearly a quarter came to Macquarie having already undertaken further study. As a university ranked among the top 200 in the world we also attract international students to our courses – in 2017 about 16 per cent of our commencing undergraduate students were from overseas.

This diversity in our student population enriches our university and enhances your learning experience. Because students bring different strengths, interests and personal circumstances to their studies we believe that our entry requirements should also reflect this diversity. Let’s find your pathway

Everyone comes to university on an ATAR. Right? No, not with Macquarie Entry. ATAR is just one of the indicators we use to determine your suitability for study. It’s true that your ATAR rank can be a useful indicator of your chances for success in a specific course. But it’s equally true that for other courses there are other indicators we can use to assess your suitability. That’s why we have 11 different admission pathways to Macquarie; ten of these assess your suitability on more than a selection ranking based on your raw ATAR or your ATAR plus adjustments such as bonus points. Let’s show you how.

If you’re currently undertaking or have just completed Year 12 studies, your Macquarie Entry will be based on one of the following pathways:

Find out more about your ATAR

Non-school applicants 

Students who completed Year 12 studies more than two years ago.

If your highest level of education is the Higher School Certificate (or equivalent), you’ll be assessed on the basis of those results.

If you’ve completed further study or have relevant work/life experience, your application will be assessed as follows:

Applicants with previous higher education study

If you’ve studied at a higher education institution, we’ll look at your results in your secondary and higher education study, or just your higher education study if you don’t have Year 12 results.

You may also be eligible for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), which allows you to reduce the duration of your course.

Applicants with previous vocational education and training (VET) study

Macquarie recognises the following completed college and TAFE qualifications:

  • Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) accredited awards (eg, Certificate IV, Diploma, Advanced Diploma and Associate Degree)
  • TAFE Associate Diploma.

If you’ve completed any of the above courses, you may be eligible for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).

Macquarie also has articulation arrangements for some TAFE NSW qualifications in the following areas:

  • Accounting
  • Business and management
  • Environmental management
  • Information technology (games design)
  • Science

Applicants with work and life experience

If you’re a non-Year 12 applicant and you don’t have adequate formal education qualifications, but you do have informal learning and work experience, you can submit a portfolio for entry into a diploma or foundation program offered by Macquarie University International College.

Bridging and enabling courses 

Need a course to prepare you for a Macquarie degree?

Our foundation and intensive programs are specifically designed to help you attain the proficiencies required for admission to a Macquarie bachelor degree.

Depending on your academic background and English language proficiency, you can choose the Standard Foundation program or Intensive program. These programs will equip you with the skills and capabilities you need to enter the first year of a Macquarie bachelor degree.

Have you completed a bridging or enabling course?

We accept a large number of bridging or enabling courses – including foundation programs offered by other universities in Australia – as entry pathways to our undergraduate courses.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples 

In addition to our Macquarie Entry options, the Walanga Muru Early Entry Pathway provides opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to study undergraduate courses at Macquarie University.

Domestic applicants with overseas qualifications 

If you’re an Australian or New Zealand citizen, or an Australian permanent resident with an overseas qualification, your application will be assessed on the basis of that qualification. UAC provides information on the assessment of overseas qualifications, or you can contact us.

Depending on where your qualification was obtained, you may also be required to sit an English language proficiency (ELP) test. UAC provides information about qualifications that usually meet the ELP requirements.

English language proficiency 

All applicants for undergraduate or postgraduate coursework studies at Macquarie University are required to provide evidence of proficiency in English. Visit Coursefinder to learn more about English language requirements for your course.

You may satisfy the English language requirements if you have successfully completed:

  • senior secondary studies equivalent to the New South Wales HSC
  • one year of Australian or comparable tertiary study in a country of qualification
