Chemistry plays a major role in our economy, environment, lifestyle and health, as well as in processes going on in the world around us.

At Macquarie you’ll study the structure, composition and properties of matter, learning how to change substances from one form to another. You’ll be on your way to a wide range of careers such as medicine and pharmacy.

Chemistry is the branch of science which studies the nature and characteristics of substances and the changes they undergo when they are mixed one with another. Chemistry uses this information to prepare new substances of value to humanity. Chemistry is involved in some way with almost everything we do or use. Chemistry is central to most of science and technology, blending at one extreme into physics, mathematics and engineering and at the other into the earth and life sciences. Chemists are employed in industries which provide us with food, energy, consumer goods, in regulatory bodies that protect our health and environment and in research institutions that provide new materials and techniques for the future. In other words, chemistry is an essential part of modern life. It also supplies us with the answers to many questions, such as –

  • Is this food fit for consumption?
  • What are the key chemical reactions that allowed life to evolve?
  • How can we make stronger fibres?
  • How can we design a new fuel cell?
  • How can we make pharmaceuticals, chemicals or vitamins?
  • Can we design and make new drugs?
  • How do pharmaceuticals and enzymes work in the body?
  • How do animals and plants protect themselves from predators?
  • How can we make industrial chemicals from oil and natural gas?
  • What is the concentration of certain contaminants from this factory?
  • can we us the chemical signals produced by all living things to control pests?
  • How is a new industrial process likely to affect the environment?
  • How can we tell what is happening inside a blast furnace, or in the exhaust of a jet engine, or down a coal mine?

Careers in chemistry

What does a chemist do?

Chemistry is a very central science and not all Chemists wear white lab coats. To explore the many career opportunities available by studying chemistry, search for ‘chemistry’ at: www.graduatecareers.com.au. You will find chemists are employed in a wide range of industries working on problems such as:

  • metal extraction from ore bodies
  • studying the nutrition of plants
  • reducing the pollution from automobile exhausts
  • the manufacture and design of explosives
  • finding new sources of energy
  • operating a water treatment plant
  • making more efficient pain killers and pharmaceuticals
  • locating new oil deposits
  • helping to solve problems of industrial waste
  • developing new materials with desirable properties.
  • understanding what makes a good diet

Chemists rely heavily on advanced instrumental techniques such as chromatography, mass spectrometry, laser spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, magnetic resonance spectroscopy and surface analysis – all using computers for control and data processing.

Through PACE, chemistry students Stuart Terry, Calvin Yung, Danielle Holgate and Josef Urmenyhazi had the opportunity to test their knowledge and research skills while completing a project along side industry professionals at a commercial research laboratory.

Chemistry Bridging Course

If you wish to study any type of chemistry at university, but have not previously done so at high school, then you are strongly advised to enrol in the Chemistry Bridging Course that is offered in February each year.  The course will introduce you to some of the basic, but very important concepts in chemistry to help you before the start of the first semester.

Chemistry & Biomolecular Sciences Scholarship

This scholarship is available to students enrolling in a Bachelor of Science degree undertaking a Major in Chemistry or Biomolecular Sciences or in the Bachelor of Medical Sciences, Medicinal Chemistry stream. The scholarship is valued at $1000 and is available each year for up to three years subject to satisfactory progress.

Le Fevre Scholarship

This scholarship is available to full-time students undertaking a Bachelor degree with a Major in Chemistry. Scholarship recipients will be required to enrol in the following units during the period of the scholarship:

Year 1: CBMS102, CBMS103

Year 2: CBMS204, CBMS207, CBMS208

Year 3: 18 credit points of CBMS units and meet the requirements of the Major in Chemistry.
The scholarship is awarded on the academic merit in the Higher School Certificate. It is tenable for three years, subject to satisfactory progress, at the following rates: $2000 in the first year, $2100 in the second year and $2200 in the third year of the scholarship.

CBMS Vacation Research Scholarship

These scholarships are open to Biomolecular Sciences and Chemistry undergraduate students. They are available during the summer break (December – February) for four weeks with extensions available by negotiation with individual lecturers. Applications are ranked on the basis of academic merit. The scholarships provide the opportunity for undergraduate students at any level to participate in cutting-edge research in a research laboratory. Scholarships are valued at $275 (tax-free) per week for a total of 4 weeks.

Prizes

The Le Fevre Memorial Prize for Physical Chemistry

Open to all students proceeding to the degree of Bachelor. Awarded for excellence in physical chemistry at 100 level.

The Le Fevre Memorial Prize for 200-Level Chemistry

Open to all students proceeding to the degree of Bachelor. Awarded for excellence in 200-level chemistry units.

The Anchor Resources Excellence in Laboratory Prize

Open to all students proceeding to the degree of Bachelor. Awarded for proficiency in the unit CBMS208 Chemical Analysis I

The Beckman-Coulter Prize

Open to all students proceeding to the degree of Bachelor. Awarded for proficiency in CBMS332 (Protein Discovery and Analysis).

The 3M Pharmaceuticals Prize

Open to all students proceeding to the degree of Bachelor. Awarded for proficiency in 300-level chemistry units totalling at least 12 credit points.

Masson Memorial Scholarship Prize

The Scholarship Prize, given by the Royal Australian Chemical Insitute (RACI), which has been established as a memorial to the late Sir David Orme Masson, Founder of the Institute, is open to any financial Member of the Institute or to any registered financial Student of the Institute, who has attained the academic qualification of BSc or its equivalent, and who is eligible to proceed for a further year’s study of Chemistry at BSc Honours level.

The PANalytical Prize in Analytical Chemistry

Open to all students proceeding to the degree of Bachelor. Awarded for proficiency in the unit CBMS208 Chemical Analysis I

The Royal Australian Chemical Institute NSW Analytical Chemistry Prize

Open to all students proceeding to the degree of Bachelor. Awarded for proficiency in the unit CBMS308 Chemical Analysis II.

The Royal Australian Chemical Institute Student Prize
