Guardianship Policy Overview
The Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP) requires international students under the age of 18 to demonstrate that they have appropriate welfare and accommodation arrangements in place for the duration of their student visa or until they turn 18. DIBP requires students to have welfare arrangements in place when they apply for a visa.
The ELC requires the guardianship details for students under the age of 18 before the payment of tuition fees.
For accommodation and welfare, there are three options:
- Live in Australia with a parent or legal guardian/custodian.
- Live in Australia with a suitable relative who is nominated by the student's parent or legal custodian.
- Welfare provided by the ELC - live in a homestay arrangement.
If students wish to change their guardian or accommodation, they must first obtain permission from Macquarie University English Language Centre. If they change without gaining permission, they run the risk of their Visa being cancelled.
