Independent Learning Centre

Your opportunities to improve your language don't end in the classroom. Our dedicated Independent Learning Centre (ILC) is generally open from 10.00am-4.00pm Monday to Friday and is very popular with our students. You can choose to study here before or after class to use our online resources and books, do your homework or research a class project.

You can also attend free workshops and study groups to build your skills in speaking, writing, academic skills, grammar or pronunciation, or check in with our ILC support staff for advice.

We deliver about 200 workshops and study groups each year to support your English development. Here is a sample weekly timetable of the extra support that we offer at no additional cost:

Student advisors

Student advisorsAt the ELC, there is always someone to help you. We care about our students and understand the importance of student well-being.

You can talk to one of our dedicated Student Advisors about your studies, your goals, our policies, or about life in Australia. Our Advisors are qualified and experienced in student advising as well as in classroom teaching.

We want you to have the best start at Macquarie, so we offer a fun orientation to help you settle in. On Orientation Day, you will meet other new students and key staff members who will provide information to help with your studies and adjust to life in Australia. They will provide important information and explain policies that you need to know about. During the day, you will go on a campus tour and share some food together. It’s free and compulsory for all new students.

Activities program

Learning English continues out of class, and you can take part in a range of free or low-cost social activities that we organise especially for you. By taking part in our social activities program, you can practise your English, make friends, learn new skills and enjoy your time in Australia. The more you practise English, the more your communication skills within Australian society will improve.

To make sure our students have the best possible care, there are some policies in place for all ELC students and staff to follow.
