Unique Student Identifier
The Unique Student Identifier (USI) came into effect 1 January 2021.
The USI is a lifelong reference number issued by the Australian Government for your education journey. It is made up of a combination of ten numbers and letters.
By 2023, all tertiary students (including international students studying onshore) will need to have a USI to graduate and receive their award.

Who needs a USI?
From 1 January 2021: all commencing domestic students will need a USI in order to be eligible for a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) or commonwealth financial assistance (eg. HECS-HELP, FEE-HELP, SA-HELP).
From 1 January 2023: all higher education students (including those who commenced prior to 2021) must have a USI to graduate and receive their award.

A student who commenced their admitted course at Macquarie University prior to 1 January 2021. | Must apply for USI before 1 January 2023 (if graduating from 2023 onwards). |
Where do I get a USI?
Applying for a USI is free and an easy process. Go to www.usi.gov.au. You will need to provide documentation to prove your identity. Below are samples of acceptable forms of identity to obtain your USI. You will need at least one of the following:
- Australian passport
- Australian birth certificate
- Australian driver licence
- Medicare card
- International passport plus an Australian valid visa
- Centrelink concession cards
- Citizenship certificate

I already have a USI. What should I do?
If you already have a USI, go to eStudent and complete the USI collection form via My USI.
If you are not sure, or you have forgotten your USI, go to www.usi.gov.au "Check or find your USI".
How and when do I provide my USI?
Students commencing courses can provide their USI during the acceptance and enrolment process via the ‘My USI’ tab in eStudent.
Visit www.usi.gov.au to request or recover your USI. Once you have requested your USI, clink on the ‘My USI’ tab in eStudent and complete the USI collection form. You must provide the USI by the census date of your first study period at Macquarie.
For continuing students (domestic, international and higher degree research), you can provide your USI on the ‘My Details’ tab in eStudent.
