Your next step to success

Hear from our students

"The Next Step program was absolutely life changing for me. As someone who entered into trades and subsequently military and emergency service careers, I had no prior experience with degree level education. I found the subjects, tutors, campus, and fellow students to be of the highest calibre. Perhaps the best part of the program was the complete integration into the regular university experience. At no time did I feel like I was an outsider, or part of a special program. I felt like an ordinary student. Excellent program."

John C, 2018 Next Step student.

"As a mature age student with no ATAR the Next Step programme gave me a clear route onto my degree course. By enrolling in units associated with my final degree my efforts have counted toward my final goal from day one."

Thomas E, 2018 Next Step student.

What is it?

Our Next Step program is a pathway program for individuals who are seeking to study their dream Macquarie bachelors degree but don't meet the entry requirements at first.

How does the Next Step program work?

In this pathway course, you'll study a manageable part time study load of two units in Session 1 and two other units in Session 2.

You will attend classes alongside current Macquarie students as you would in an undergraduate course.

When the four units are successfully completed, you'll secure your place in one of 19 Macquarie degrees. However, we also recognise high achieving students, who will be able to articulate into a degree after completing just 2 units.

For example:

 JohnMary

Session 1, 2020

Selects 2 units of study from the Next Step unit list

Eg: i) Academic Communications Unit & ii) 1 unit outlined by Faculty

In Session 1, John achieves a weighted average mark ( WAM) of 57 for the 2 units he has studied.

Selects 2 units of study from the Next Step unit list

Eg: i) Academic Communications Unit & ii) 1 unit outlined by Faculty

In Session 1, Mary achieves a high weighted average mark ( WAM) of 65  for the 2 units she has studied.

Session 2, 2020

John selects another 2 units of study that are outlined by the Faculty

In Session 2, John passes the 2 units and achieves a WAM of 55.

As Mary has achieved a high WAM in Session 1, 2020, her hard work is rewarded.

She receives an email inviting her to apply to articulate into her chosen degree sooner.

Mary begins studying her dream degree in Sesion 2, 2020

Session 1,2021

As John has successfully completed 4 units and achieved a required WAM for the degree of his choice, he can begin studying his dream degreeMary continues her degree studies.

Session 2, 2020

Which degrees will I be eligible for?

For recent high school leavers (2018 and 2019 candidates) who completed their HSC (or equivalent) within the past two years, a minimum ATAR of 50 is required, some units require a higher ATAR of 55, 60 or 65 for enrolment. No adjustment factors are taken into account for the Next Step program. The ATAR restriction does not apply to non-current school leaver applicants but the pre-requisite requirements for individual units still apply.

How to Read the table below:

Find the entry requirements and units you are required to study for the Macquarie degree you wish to articulate into. The table lists the units available for the Next Step pathway to the degree. Information on each unit can be found in the current Handbook online.

Please note: The articulation requirements within each degree refers to the WAM requirement for a standard articulation. All degrees have a WAM requirement of 65 or above for accelerated articulation.

To secure a place into a bachelor degree you must receive an overall Weighted Average Mark (WAM) as required.

*To be eligible to apply for these specific degrees, you must successfully complete specific units identified by the relevant department offering the degree.

How can I apply?

Submit an online application. Once your application has been assessed you will be contacted via your nominated email address.

How can Next Step help me secure a place in a bachelor degree?

To secure a guaranteed place in a bachelor degree, you are required to:

successfully complete four units and receive an overall Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of either 50,  54, or 57(out of 100) as required - referred to as standard articulation; OR

  1. successfully complete two units and receive an overall Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of 65 (out of 100) - referred to as accelerated articulation; AND
  2. complete specific units outlined by the faculty offering the degree (if required);   AND
  3. complete an academic communications unit* in the first session of study if applicable in the degree you wish to articulate into.

*See the "Recommended units" expandable section below.

For students who achieve a WAM of ≥ 65 out of 100 (Accelerated articulation)

If you complete your first 2 units with a WAM of 65 or above, your hard work will be recognised and rewarded. You can articulate into your chosen pathway degree sooner - after just one session of part-time study in the Next Step program. You will automatically be assessed for acceleration eligibility upon release of your examination result. If you are eligible for articulation, you will be invited to complete an online application via email.

How to calculate my WAM?

Please use the Macquarie University WAM Estimator to calculate your WAM.

Glossary

Minimum ATAR (2018 and 2019 only) – students who completed their HSC in 2018 or 2019 must have this ATAR to choose this degree pathway. The ATAR restriction does not apply to non-school applicants

Articulation WAM requirement: You must achieve this WAM (Weighted Average Mark)  in your studies at Macquarie University to be able to articulate into this degree program. Your WAM is the average of the actual mark you achieved in all units of the course and is a mark out of 100.

Compulsory units: Some Next Step pathways have units that must be successfully completed to articulate into the degree.

Elective units: Some Next Step pathways have elective units that you choose as part of your pathway

Unit Name: The name of the unit you will take. More information about the unit can be found in the Handbook, including mode of delivery

Session offered: Some units are offered in Session 1 or Session 2 or sometimes both Sessions 1 and 2 (so you choose the session). Next Step students can take up to 2 units each semester.

Next Step Unit list: Every year the University selects units suitable for Next Step students. Some units have pre-requisites or minimum ATAR. This is the Next Step Unit List for 2020.

Academic Communications unit: These units are specifically designed to prepare you for academic requirements at a tertiary level and focus on developing critical and analytical skills in communication through reading, writing and the discussion of issues in your related area of study. If you are choosing a non-specified pathway, consider taking an Academic Communications unit. The Academic Communications units are:

ACOM1003 - Academic Communication in Business

ACOM1002 - Academic Communication in Science

ACOM1001 - Academic Communication in the Social Sciences and Humanities

Recommended units

Academic Communications unit

You are recommended to undertake an Academic Communications unit* as part of your study plan if you are an enrolled Next Step student. These units are specifically designed to prepare you for academic requirements at a tertiary level and focus on developing critical and analytical skills in communication through reading, writing and the discussion of issues in your related area of study.

Full detail of the unit description can be found below:

  • ACOM1003 - Academic Communication in Business
  • ACOM1002- Academic Communication in Science
  • ACOM1001 - Academic Communication in the Social Sciences and Humanities

*If you have achieved an HSC performance Band 4 or higher in English, you are exempted from this requirement. However if the faculty of the degree you want to articulate into specifies an Academic Communications unit as part of the Next Step study plan, then you will still need to undertake the Academic Communications unit.

Example

Alisha completed her NSW Higher School Certificate (HSC) in 2019, achieved an overall ATAR of 58, and would like to study a Bachelor of Science. She also achieved an HSC Performance band 3 in English. The ATAR required to study science units (subjects) is 60, so she will not be able to study any science units whilst in the Next Step program. She then selects to study units indicated in the Next Step unit list in which she qualifies and has an interest in. As she scored a band 3 in English, she is also required to undertake an Academic Communications unit (preferably the unit relating to science, ACOM1002, as that will be most beneficial for her).

Her enrolment may look like this:

Session 1, 2020
ACOM1002 - Academic Communications in Science - she undertakes this unit in her first session of study as she did not achieve Band 4 in HSC English.
ANTH1006 - Drugs Across Cultures

Session 2, 2020
PHIL1032 - Happiness, Goodness and Justice
ANTH1050 - Identity and Difference: Introduction to Anthropology

If Alisha achieves 4 passes, which equates to an overall WAM of 50 or above,  she can then articulate into her degree of Bachelor of Science in Session 1, 2021.

If Alisha successfully completed the 2 units and achieves a WAM of 65 or above after Session 1, she will be eligible for accelerated articulation and can start her Bachelor of Science in Session 2, 2020.
