Tinotenda Kunesu, who’s undertaking a Bachelor of Information Technology, scored an awesome job at TinkerTank after connecting with Macquarie Student Employment (MQSE). TinkerTank is an innovative organisation that provides project-based, student-led learning experiences in science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM). They run a range of programs for both primary and high school students.
“The Career and Employment Service were fantastic in helping me secure casual employment near uni, which really helped me settle into uni life. I came across the TinkerTank ad in the CES’ monthly job alert newsletter, so I emailed them my CV and expression of interest. After learning I’d landed an interview, the CES team helped me prepare my resume and prepare for the interview by conducting a mock interview with me. They also gave me really valuable advice about what employers are looking for in student employees.”
Tinotenda is a lead mentor at TinkerTank. As well as supervising other mentors, he guides the young students with various tasks such as coding, robotics, 3D printing and design, and stop-motion animation.
“What first attracted me to the role was that it was in the information technology sector. I knew I’d be able to practice the things I’m learning in my degree, because I’m always practising my coding and exploring different languages.”
Tinotenda, who envisions a career in the defence sector – specifically cybersecurity – firmly believes his work at TinkerTank is preparing him well for the future.
“The job at TinkerTank really couldn’t be more perfect for me – I’m so grateful to the CES, because without it, I wouldn’t have even known about the role. The CES actively connect students with job listings that are most relevant to them, which is what’s so great about it. I primarily received listings in the IT sector and with employers who knew I was a uni student who required flexible shifts. I love my job and am really thankful that the CES connected me with such an amazing organisation.”
