MANNING CLARK HOUSE OFFERS RESIDENTIAL FELLOWSHIPS
Manning Clark House, assisted by funding from Australian copyright management company Copyright Agency Limited (CAL), invites applications for residential fellowships in 2008.
Under the MCH/CAL Residential Fellowships program, launched last year, three fellows are selected each year over three years to pursue study projects in Canberra. CAL is a not-for-profit, member-based organisation, which provides a bridge between creators and users of copyright material. CAL is providing $80,400 to support the administration of the MCH/CAL Residential Fellowships.
The Fellowships enable recipients to write and conduct research in a congenial scholarly environment for up to six weeks. They stay at the Canberra home in which the historian Professor Manning Clark, his wife Dymphna and their family lived and worked.
Manning Clark House facilitates access for fellows to such Canberra institutions as the Australian National University, the National Library of Australia, the National Archives of Australia, the National Museum of Australia and to Canberra-based writers and thinkers.
MCH president Sebastian Clark says applicants may include academics and researchers, independent scholars, teachers of history and English, writers, artists and journalists. “At least one fellowship each year is designated for a project in an education-related area. Applications are particularly encouraged from rural and regional areas for those who, hampered by their location, are normally unable to access the invaluable resources provided through a residency at Manning Clark House.”
The fellowships cover transport to and from Canberra, accommodation for up to six weeks and a weekly budget to cover other expenses. Fellows are encouraged to participate in Manning Clark House’s programs and events.
The deadline for applications for the 2008 fellowships is 26 November 2007. The 2008 fellows will be announced in December 2007.
Guidelines for applicants are available on the Manning Clark House website at www.manningclark.org.au. For more information on CAL please visit www.copyright.com.au
For further information or to arrange interviews please contact Clare Hoey at Manning Clark House on (02) 6295 9433 or email director@manningclark.org.au

Come along and join the Dean and staff for drinks, nibbles and a chat, and the opportunity to catch up with old friends. You will also enjoy the Gypsy swing music of the Campbell Atkins Jazz Band.
A highlight of the evening will be an illustrated talk by the guest speaker and Macquarie alumnus, Dr Peter Doyle, novelist, musician, academic and author of City of Shadows: Sydney Police Photographs 1912 to 1948, which explores the dark side of life in Sydney.
Dr Doyle will discuss his work, delving into the 140,000-strong collection of forensic negatives held at the Justice & Police Museum in Sydney, some of which are featured in the award-winning book and exhibition project, City of Shadows. In this talk, Dr Doyle will discuss some of the amazing images which didn't make the cut for City of Shadows, and preview some of the images which have come to light more recently, in particular a haul of extraordinary criminal portraits from 1920s Sydney.
