If you and your manager have identified a development opportunity or program that is not provided internally, the next step is to review providers within the industry. For example ATEM - http://www.atem.org.au/, AIM – http://www.aim.com.au/ and Universities Australia - http://www.universitiesaustralia.edu.au/ offer courses which may be suitable.

Other development opportunities are available through Specialist Support Grants and General Staff Competitive Awards. For further information contact Robyn Clark on x9619 or Sharon Messina on x9734.

U@MQ UPDATE

As the strategy and vision develops for U@MQ the management team is committed to keeping staff updated with information about the developments associated with the new entity of U@MQ.

With this in mind, the following list of frequently asked questions has been created.

If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact Deidre Anderson, CEO of U@MQ, on x7638.

What is U@MQ?

U@MQ is a new Macquarie University organisation wholly owned by the University, its major contributor, and is fully accountable to the NSW Auditor General. It has been established by the University to provide a new vision for campus life for students and staff. It includes all operations of both SAM, student bodies and MUSR and includes food, retail, sport and recreation facilities and services, club, societies, child care, events and entertainment.

Who will be leading this organisation and how was this decided?

U@MQ is a company limited by guarantee and its sole member is the University. The University Council internally appointed Deidre Anderson who was previously the CEO of Macquarie University Sport and Recreation (MUSR).

The U@MQ management structure will also include:

  • Craig Oliver, Director of Sport and Recreation, responsible for the Sports and Aquatic Centre and health promotions across campus;
  • Brett Lovegrove, Director of Best Practice, responsible for finance, sustainability practices, performance management and operations;
  • Pip Brook, Communications and Marketing Manager.

Craig, Brett and Pip will report directly to Deidre.

Deidre will report to an Executive Board chaired by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Chief Operating Officer, Paul Bowler. This Board will be responsible for the strategic management and governance of the organisation and will operate to protect the interest of students and the University as a principal stakeholder. A temporary staff management structure has been established and it will be in place until August to ensure that the various functions of the organisations operate collectively.

Time frame

The legal procedures merging the entities are underway and the finalisation of winding up both companies is also happening. It is anticipated that U@MQ will be operational from 20 July 2007.

The management team of SAM and MUSR are currently working on a plan to merge all the functional areas of both organisations. A senior management team has been put in place by the CEO and a strategic plan will then be developed and presented to the new Board for approval. Following the approval it will be communicated to all students and staff.

The planning process

To ensure that we create the most successful vision for U@MQ the planning process to develop the strategic direction for the new student services body will involve as many students and staff as possible. Over the coming weeks a survey will be developed in conjunction with students and launched. This survey will provide vital feedback on what students would like to see from U@MQ into the future.

On 7 August there will also be a planning session held. We encourage all staff to attend. This session will be held on Level 3, SAM Building from 9.30am–4.00pm. If you would like to take part in this planning day please contact Bronwyn Simmons at bronwyn.simmons@musr.mq.edu.au

Partnership with the University

The University has undergone tremendous change in recent times and the success of U@MQ will be determined upon the organisation working more co-operatively with all areas of the University. The Vice-Chancellor, Steven Schwartz, has a vision and this is being implemented more and more each day.

Programs and services

Most of the services and programs will stay the same for the remainder of 2007. This will allow time for planning and engagement with the University community. However, from 1 January 2008 new programs and services will start to be implemented.

Dealing with questions from other people and the media

If you receive questions from around the campus that you are unable to answer or are approached by the media for comment please refer these directly to the CEO Deidre Anderson on x7638.

What happens to the brands of SAM and MUSR?

Both the SAM and MUSR will cease to exist as of 1 January 2008 when the U@MQ brand will be implemented.

What happens to SAM Life Members?

Entitlements will remain the same for the remainder of 2007. As of 1 January 2008 all student Life Members will receive a discount card and student rates for all sport and recreation facilities. Any requests from SAM Life Members should be directed to Pip Brook x7045.

SPEECH PATHOLOGY WEEK

The Macquarie University Speech Clinic and the Speech Pathology program in the Department of Linguistics will celebrate Speech Pathology Week from 22–28 July. This year’s theme is Feeding and Swallowing: It’s No Choking Matter.

Did you know that:

  • speech pathologists are specialists who work with individuals who have communication and swallowing difficulties
  • speech pathologists work with individuals at all stages of the lifespan (from premature babies to the elderly)
  • communication difficulties include stuttering, voice difficulties, difficulties with speaking clearly, understanding others or telling stories
  • approximately one in seven Australians has difficulties with communication
  • difficulties with swallowing affect up to 70 percent of premature babies and 50 percent of all stroke patients
  • communication and swallowing difficulties can have a major impact upon an individual’s quality of life and ability to participate in daily social activities.

The Macquarie University Speech Clinic is the teaching and research clinic of the Master of Speech and Language Pathology program. The Clinic offers speech pathology services to community members of all ages. It is staffed by experienced speech pathologists and provides student speech pathologists with valuable clinical experience. A number of research projects are also currently being conducted in the Clinic.

During Speech Pathology Week the Clinic will be conducting a display at Macquarie Centre to increase the community’s awareness of the role of speech pathologists.

Macquarie University staff are also encouraged to visit us during Speech Pathology Week at Level 2, 299 Lane Cove Road, for a coffee and chat, to look at the facilities and learn more about speech pathology.

MACQUARIE UNIVERSITY ROLE PLAYING NETWORK

Macquarie University is interested in setting up a network to support teachers who use role playing as a teaching tool.

A role play is an activity where participants assume specified roles to perform tasks, interact, collaborate and debate with other roles, assumed by other participants. This interaction is online. The purpose of a role play is to give students an insight into different ways participants can view an event depending on their background, experience, needs etc.

This network is part of a Carrick funded EnRoLE initiative, which encompasses all Australian universities. Some of the aims of this initiative are:

  • to offer support to existing role play designers and facilitators
  • to double the number of role play designers and/or facilitators
  • to document and disseminate examples of existing role plays.

We would like to set up this network to offer support to existing role play designers and facilitators and encourage teachers new to role plays.

If you have used, are using or would like to use role plays in your teaching and would like to be part of this network, please contact Andrew Lovell-Simons on x9271 or email andrew.lovell-simons@mq.edu.au

Had any good ideas recently? Think they may have commercial potential? Not sure how to protect and commercialise them? Well look no further! To start you thinking about these issues, you are invited to attend a free intellectual property (IP) seminar, hosted by Access Macquarie Limited, the commercial arm of Macquarie University, on Thursday 16 August.

Intellectual property, the product of hard work and research, can be valuable to both you and the University, but it is easy for this value not to be fully realised. Whether a lecturer, researcher or student, you need to know how to identify, protect and commercialise your ideas and innovations.

Experienced IP experts will provide relevant information about IP created in the University community. Some of the topics to be covered in the seminar include:

  • What is IP?
  • The mechanics of patenting – driving a career with patents and publications
  • Commercialisation at Macquarie University – the system and where to go for help
  • A success story: commercialising with Access MQ.

Those who attend will learn:

  • The value and need for protecting innovation
  • Patents, trademarks and designs
  • Copyright: your rights
  • Commercialisation of IP, forming a start-up company
  • The commercialisation process and support mechanisms at Macquarie.

The seminar will commence with a free lunch and conclude with the opportunity to talk with the guest speakers.

Date: Thursday 16 August
Time: 12.00 noon – 4.30pm. (Free lunch provided 12.00 noon – 12.45pm)

ACCESS MACQUARIE —EXPERT ADVISORY SERVICES

Access Macquarie seeks to promote the vast wealth of knowledge and experience available at Macquarie University for expert advisory services. The role of the expert is to provide factual information either in writing, or by appearing in court or before a tribunal where a specialist opinion is required on a particular issue.

Expert advice is sought in a number of broad legal, commercial and government settings. Private sector companies seek assistance to analyse high level strategic and operational issues that cannot be readily sourced by professional consulting organisations. Experts are widely used by law firms as expert witnesses and also to provide expert interpretations and analysis in the preparation of legal opinions.

Governments also seek expert advice in public policy setting: the expert can assist the identification of legitimate arguments for government legislation and regulation as well as in assessing the potential impacts of such policies.

As recognised leaders in their professional fields, both nationally and internationally, Macquarie University academics are available through Access MQ to provide expert advice.

To establish an expert advisory service we need to profile University staff to determine the capacity to provide this expertise. If you are interested in being listed on the Expert Advice Database, please fill out the short questionnaire below, copy it to an email and send it to expertadvice@access.mq.edu.au .

This book by Carroll Pursell is to be launched by Professor Desley Deacon of the Australian National University and is published by Columbia University Press.

Carroll Pursell draws fascinating connections between icons of popular culture and landmarks of American technological innovation as he studies the effect of postwar politics on the evolution of science and technology.

This entertaining history involves a range of technologies, from television, the automobile, and genetically engineered crops to contraceptives, Tupperware, and the Veg-O-Matic, and extracts political meaning from private objects, like toy soldiers, low riders, and lawn chemicals. He also discusses the state of technology today, addressing such issues as globalisation and other challenges to "modernist" technologies.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Special Interest Group: Peer Observation and Learning and Teaching

Since the beginning of 2007 there has been interest from Macquarie academic staff in peer observation of teaching as a quality enhancement activity. In response to this, and to make use of materials already available in the higher education community, a special interest group in peer observation was established. Its membership includes colleagues interested in peer observation, as well as the Associate Deans, Learning and Teaching to whom any interest in the group should be directed. The group is chaired by Ian Solomonides from the Centre for Professional Development.

Four meetings have been held resulting in a set of materials for staff interested in peer observation of teaching in their own Departments and Divisions, as well as some shared understanding of the principles and objectives behind peer observation and its use at Macquarie.

The materials, including guidance documents and pro-forma, are in Word format to enable local modification and are available on the CPD website at: http://www.cpd.mq.edu.au/teaching/interest.htm A record of each meeting is circulated to the participants and are available to other interested parties.

Several key steps have been taken to implement peer observation. The principles and materials have been discussed at a number of Divisional Learning and Teaching Committees with some Departments formally adopting the strategy and incorporating it into their practice. Presentations have also been made to other interested groups and we expect that further training will be provided by the Centre for Professional Development.

The group has recently broadened its focus to consider other aspects associated with quality enhancement in teaching and learning at Macquarie. The group has shared documentation and commented on the emerging Australasian University Survey of Student Engagement and Macquarie’s draft Learning and Teaching Plan.

This group is a valuable opportunity for sharing ideas between colleagues from various subject areas and discipline backgrounds. Through this approach we can develop a better understanding of the learning and teaching issues that affect us and a capacity to deal with those issues.

For information a WebCT discussion board for online discussion has been established at: http://online.mq.edu.au/pub/CPDLTI/

  • On 8 July, audience reach spiked at 3.1 million for 39 individual items. The large audience reach was particularly due to a number of television and radio interviews with Professor Clive Williams (PICT) in relation to the London and Glasgow bombing attempts.

  • On 10 July, the number of items peaked at 78, with 58 of these being syndications of an ABC Radio interview with Dr Geoffrey Hawker (Politics) about the worsening situation in Zimbabwe.
