Legal Deposit is a statutory provision which obliges publishers to deposit copies of their publications in libraries in the country in which they are published.

The National Library and other deposit libraries assume an obligation to preserve all material lodged with them. Legal Deposit ensures that the works of authors and publishers will survive for the use of future generations. The comprehensive collections of Australian publications formed in this way provide the means for research into all aspects of Australian life, history, culture, artistic, commercial, technical and scientific endeavour.

Under the Copyright Act 1968 and various State Acts, a copy of any work published in Australia must be deposited with the National Library of Australia and the appropriate State library.

All Australian publishers must deliver a copy of library material to the National Library within one month of publication. Library material means a book, periodical (eg newsletter, annual report), newspaper, pamphlet, sheet of letterpress, sheet music, map, plan, chart or table.

Legal deposit extends not only to commercial publishers but also to private individuals, clubs, churches, societies and organisations. Legal deposit of the material is the sole responsibility of the publisher or author.

Additionally, in New South Wales there are other Legal Deposit requirements. Legal deposit is required under the New South Wales Copyright Act 1879-1952, ss 5-7. The Act requires that a copy of every 'book' first published in New South Wales be lodged within two months of publication at the following three libraries:

INTERNATIONAL TAXATION AND FOREIGN INVESTMENT PAPER

Professor Johannes Jüttner is in the process of preparing, as guest editor of the refereed journal Economic Analysis and Policy, a Special Issue on International Taxation and Foreign Investment. The areas of research for the Special Issue include
  • Tax policies and companies’ global location decisions
  • The impact of taxation on the repatriation of dividends, interest and royalties
  • Tax treaties and exchange of information amongst tax authorities
  • Taxation and cross-border mergers and acquisitions
  • Trends in global capital income taxation
  • Impact of taxation on internationally mobile highly-skilled employees.
Contributions have been received from leading tax experts around the world, amongst them Professor Peter Sørensen, Copenhagen University; Professor Michael Devereux, Warwick University and Dr Harry Grubert, US Treasury. Renowned Australian tax specialists have also contributed.

The collection of papers addresses important issues of great concern for our national economy and its future prospects. Local taxation issues as well as the global tax net determine in important ways whether we can attract and retain internationally mobile capital and make Australia a tax-attractive place to invest.

For enquiries, please contact: Johannes Jüttner on x8481.

PHARMACY NEWS

Hayfever is commonly caused by an allergic reaction. In November these reactions are usually related to pollens from grass and trees, and also dust mites, animal fur, mould spores and insect bites.

When these irritants come into contact with the tissue inside the nose they cause an immune trigger leading to sneezing, itching, runny nose and nasal congestion.

There are many treatment options available to hayfever sufferers. Broadly, hayfever sufferers can choose drug-based conventional treatments including antihistamine tablets, nasal steroid sprays and anti-allergy injections or natural alternatives.

While the drug-based options are effective there can be problems with drowsiness, depressed immune system and rebound congestion.

The natural alternatives include: Horseradish (relief from hayfever symptoms including sinus congestion), garlic (relief from upper respiratory tract infections including sinusitis), Vitamin C (depresses histamine and allergic reactions) and Marshmallow and Fenugreek (nutritionally supports the respiratory system).

For further information about which treatment may suit you, please contact Elizabeth at the University Pharmacy, Monday to Friday 9.00am to 5.00pm.
