LAST AMIS UPDATE FOR 2001


1. Current focus

AMIS has been used to re-enrol approximately 600 MGSM students. New MGSM students will be enrolling on 4, 7 and 8 December, and this will be the first time that study patterns will be used in AMIS. Graduate Accounting and Commerce students (GACC) will be re-enrolling on 3 and 4 December.

Examination results entry has started already, with all results to be loaded by 3.00pm on Thursday 6 December. Some training sessions for review of exam results have been held and more have been scheduled. For training schedules please visit our Web site at: http://www.mq.edu.au/AMIS/train.html
After Senate has approved the examinations results at its special meeting on Friday 14 December, authorised Division staff can make changes of grades directly in AMIS, rather than having to send the results on paper to the Academic Program Section. Exam results will be available to students on the Web on Monday 17 December.

A number of additional reports are being written, and interface issues are being resolved. Changes of program are being processed on a continuous basis.

2. Nomenclature

The new student system which has replaced SIS and which is based on the implementation of the software product Student One, will be henceforth referred to as AMIS, the University’s Academic Management Information System. This is consistent with University practice in referring to its other major enterprise systems: FMIS, PMIS etc.

3. The changing face of the AMIS team

The AMIS Project Team has been an implementation team with the task of going live with AMIS. Now that this has been achieved, there is a huge challenge ahead to ensure that the new system can provide all the business processes required in a University Calendar year. We need to gradually move from the AMIS implementation support team to a less resource-intensive ongoing system support service. For this reason the Systems Support Services of the Registrar’s Office and some AMIS team staff will be working together over the next year to achieve this end. This group will have the name of ‘AMIS Support Services’.
Some staff will be supporting AMIS from end-user offices:

Melenna Krenmayr has already returned to the International Office and Katrina O’Shea to the Undergraduate Studies Section, to share their Student One expertise with staff in these areas. Nieves Wynn has returned to the Postgraduate Studies Section for two weeks, prior to taking up a new position with GACC, where her expertise will be put to good use. Liz Hoese will return to OFS before the end of the year and will provide much-needed support for the student finance areas of AMIS.

Some team members will be leaving the University at the end of the year: our consultant Crystal Report writer, Lynn Booth; and Colin Christie, our Training and HelpDesk Co-ordinator.

Beth Barclay completes her role as Implementation Manager at the end of the year. The ongoing aspects of her Implementation Manager role will be shared by the SSS Manager, Caroline Pindar, and the User Support and Operations Manager position (recently advertised and yet to be appointed), with support from Suzanne Kelly. It is hoped that Beth will be undertaking a new role with AMIS Support Services: the important and challenging task of working on the rollout of AMIS Web functionality.

Some AMIS staff will be staying with AMIS Support Services, for varying periods of time: Kerrin Parry, Lois Salisbury, Genevieve Freys and Ryan Arndt. Suzanne Kelly will revert to her role as Assistant Registrar, with responsibility for the success of AMIS Support Services. AMIS team members from OCS-MIS (John Idaszak, Graeme Traves, Kathy Foo, Janine Beeren, Azad Bulla) will continue to provide essential support to AMIS in the same way that they ably supported SIS. The ongoing co-operative relationship with IT Services staff will continue to be critical to the success of AMIS.

As you are probably aware, advertisements during the Christmas/New Year period rarely attract many applications. Accordingly, you may wish to delay advertising until late in January to increase your chances of attracting a greater pool of suitable applicants. Only in exceptional circumstances would the Personnel Office recommend placing an advertisement prior to Saturday 12 January 2002.

ADHD CAMPS AT MACQUARIE UNIVERSITY

“Proud to be me” summer camps will become a permanent feature of the cooperation between Macquarie University Sports Association and The Comenius, Descartes, Maimonides Global Institute (CDMGI). CDMGI is a non-profit research institute specialising in educational, health and social issues. The Institute has been involved for the last five years in a multidisciplinary research of ADHD and other related learning disorders. The research led to the establishment of number of programs for children with ADHD and their families - including their siblings and grandparents. A programs for adults with ADHD is also in preparation.

The first set of summer camps will be conducted in January 2002. There will be three camps – each from Monday to Friday, from 9.00am to 4.00pm. The starting dates are 7 January, 14 January and 21 January. A provision will be made for those parents who need to bring their children earlier than 9.00am and cannot collect them until 5.00pm.

As the name of the camps suggests, the main aim of the program is:

1)       to remove the negative label from the words ADHD (or ADD); and

2)       to encourage and stimulate the children to achieve their potential in number of areas such as sport, art, music, creative skills, social skills.

An achievement in any area a child is interested in will improve his/her self-esteem, which is the first precondition of any successful treatment. The present camps are designed for children between 6 and 12-13 years of age.

Parents or grandparents of children with ADHD who are staff members of Macquarie University will find the location practical and convenient. As there is a lot of interest in the program, it would be a good idea to book the child/children as soon as possible. When you book your child you will receive detailed information about the program and the fee.

PHARMACY NEWS

Last September, the Pharmacy on campus changed ownership and as the new owner of the Pharmacy, I hope to be of assistance to the University community.

Pharmacy Services Include:


This month, the Pharmacy is promoting skin care.  The primary treatment for dry, flaked or cracked skin is to replace and lock moisture into the skin.  Please visit the Pharmacy and I will recommend a product to suit your needs.

The Pharmacy will be open during December 2001 (even though the SAM Shop will be closed), however the Pharmacy will need to close for few days in early December due to the Shop refurbishment.  Customers will be notified in advance of the exact dates.

ANATOMY COMES TO MACQUARIE IN 2002

Ever since the chiropractic school was incorporated into Macquarie University, chiropractic students and other students of the health sciences have had to go to the University of Sydney to complete their anatomy and histology studies. With the introduction of CHIR107 for the first semester in 2002, we have finally taken the first step in the process of having our own anatomy program at Macquarie. This coincides with the introduction of the Bachelor of Health (Community Health) and the re-naming of the Department to the Department of Health and Chiropractic.

As well as chiropractic students, we are hoping that students from other related fields (such as psychology students) will come to our introductory course in anatomy.

The subject of anatomy is one of continuing relevance, especially now thanks to the growing consciousness in our community of the human body and its workings. We are always being told to eat right and exercise more. With the study and understanding of basic anatomical concepts, a more analytical approach can be brought to bear when examining these common media edicts.

Using modern technology and the many intricate and complex models now available, we will be able to give our students the hands-on experience that is fundamental to the understanding of this truly three-dimensional subject.

So, we hope to see you at our demonstration stand “Anatomy at Mac” planned for Orientation week, and at our other promotions.

SAM Shop Temporary Closure
The SAM Shop is getting a makeover.  This means that the SAM Shop will be closed from late November until early January 2002.  Daily newspapers, a selection of cigarettes and popular magazines will be sold from the SAM Spot (SAM Building Level 1) while the SAM Shop is under renovation.

The last day trade is Thursday 22 November and it reopens on 14 January 2002.

Christmas is around the corner so the SAM Spot (SAM Building Level 1) has stocked up on Christmas stamps.  For mail within Australia, Card only stamps are 40c each (or $8.00 for a book of 20) and international Card only stamps are 80c each.

Dr Mark Eldridge (Biological Sciences):  has found that a population of brush-tailed rock wallabies living on an island off the coast of New Zealand are the same species as a population in NSW that is facing extinction and wants Kawau Island wallabies to mate with their Australian relatives, Daily Telegraph, 7 November

AMERICAN STUDIES INSTITUTES 2002












For Australian Academics who are teaching and/or developing curriculum related to or including some aspects of American politics, history, literature, law or culture at an Australian educational institution.

Fulbright American Studies Institutes are six-week academic programs for multinational groups of university faculty from outside the United States. Institutes are held at university campuses throughout the US and focus on a particular theme or topic in American Studies, with 18 - 20 international educators participating in each institute.

The purpose of these institutes is to strengthen curricula and improve the quality of teaching about the United States in academic institutions overseas. Each program includes two components: an intensive, four-week academic seminar and a study tour of up to two weeks designed to reinforce the academic content of the seminar. They are conducted between June and August of each year.

The Australian-American Fulbright Commission will nominate two Australian applicants to be considered in the US, for the 2002 Institutes. Successful applicants will receive international and domestic travel, and all institute costs including – lodging, meals and an allowance to purchase books and materials. Preference will be given to applicants  who do not have a very recent or extensive study experience in the United States.

Higher Degree Research Scholarships Officer (Full-time (continuing)) - Ref. 19249

The appointee will administer scholarships for higher degree research candidates, communicate with individual students and academic staff, maintain appropriate scholarship records and assist other staff in the management of research thesis examination and student progression processes.

Essential Criteria: Relevant experience; proved ability to work in a team and to handle complex matters, meet deadlines and communicate effectively; familiarity with relevant computer software packages.

Desirable Criteria: Relevant tertiary qualification and/or relevant experience; general knowledge of relevant rules on postgraduate research candidature.
