NHMRC Research Fellowships

NHMRC Research Fellowships

The NHMRC Research Fellowship scheme aims to support Australia’s very best health and medical research talent in full-time research, during the most productive years of their research life to further develop as leaders in their field and contribute to the Australian research community through active participation.

The specific objectives of the scheme are to:

  • Foster an intellectual environment which supports and builds the capacity of Australian research for the future.
  • Create knowledge through investment in research which improves health and contributes to Australia’s prosperity.

Research Fellowships are open to all researchers in Australia who have a sustained track record of significant and quality research output as judged relative to opportunity.

Research Fellowships are prestigious and highly competitive awards for high performing researchers. Recipients of Research Fellowships are generally in the top 10% of their field and are viewed as ‘pushing the boundaries’ of research.

Research Fellowships are funded for five years and are paid at one of the following levels, according to the applicant's seniority and experience:

  • Senior Research Fellow, Level A ($129,835) or Level B ($143,45),
  • Principal Research Fellow ($157,077) or
  • Senior Principal Research Fellow ($177,654).

As the packages provided by the NHMRC are below the actual salary costs (including on-costs), Faculties and Departments must meet the salary gap between the award and the Macquarie salary scale.

Additional benefits and initiatives are also available for some researchers. Please refer to Clause 8 of the Funding Rules.
