In ERA 2015, research in education was rated at world standard for the discipline overall as well as for the two sub-discipline research areas of specialist studies in education and education systems.
Education research is conducted primarily by academics from the School of Education and the Institute of Early Childhood – along with their two research centres, the Macquarie University Special Education Centre (MUSEC) and the Children and Families Research Centre (CFRC). Additional contributions to education research come from the departments of Indigenous Studies and Psychology, as well as from Macquarie University’s special school and childcare centre, Mia Mia.
Collectively, education research at Macquarie focuses on the period from birth to adulthood. Projects range from working at a diagnostic level (such as the Multiliteracy Testing project funded by the Australian Research Council) through to an international collaborative examination of leadership in education systems (funded through a Cotutelle with the University of Tampere and the International Leadership Forum).
The relatively large number of researchers, together with the diversity of interests and approaches, allows Macquarie to be flexible and responsive to changes in the education context and a leader in highly dynamic areas. It creates the ideal academic context for HDR students who are exposed to a wide range of ideas and approaches.
Education researchers at Macquarie contribute to the international academic community through activities such as membership of the ARC’s College of Experts and membership of journal editorial boards including Educational Psychology, Journal of Interactive Learning, Educational Media International, Australasian Journal of Educational Technology and the Journal of Early Childhood Research.
