Junior Research Fellow 2018

Junior Research Fellow 2018

The ACRC would like to congratulate the winner of the 2018 Junior Research Fellowship ($5000), Frederick Hardtke, PhD Macquarie 2017.

Dr Hardtke’s fellowship-funded project focuses on fieldwork conducted by Fred since 2009 on the site of Hierakonpolis in Upper Egypt with its subsequent publication via his PhD thesis. The fieldwork recorded and interpreted rock art in and around the site and sought to find common links between the art and the cultures known from archaeological work to have inhabited the site since prehistoric times. The director of the Hierakonpolis Expedition, Dr Renee Friedman, was keen to produce a monograph on the rock art for the site and invited Fred to make a submission based on his PhD dissertation. The monograph will be published as a volume within a Griffith Institute Oxford University series of volumes on the Hierakonpolis site.

The fellowship will also enable the presentation of a paper at the International Federation of Rock Art Organisations (IFRAO) 2018 in Val Camonica, Italy in September 2018. This will present the results of Fred’s fieldwork at Hierakonpolis over the years and its final conclusions.
