Alvarez-Mon's interests are in the preservation, study and publication of the cultural heritage of ancient Near Eastern civilizations. His research has focussed on three areas of study: (i) delineation of Elamite art and culture; (ii) re-definition of the genesis and cultural characteristics of the Persian Empire; and (iii) the development of new tools of artistic analysis for the understanding and appreciation of non-western art.

Damian's research involves both inorganic and organic environmental geochemistry, and he is actively exploring different research themes which use those skills. Non-destructive analysis has been a recurrent theme within his analytical programs, because historical artefacts are a valuable and finite resource.
