Description | Professor Raewyn Connell delivers a public lecture, followed by her book launch. The Lecture (5:00 PM)Higher education is doing wonderfully well. There are 200 million students worldwide, and Vice-Chancellors are being paid a million dollars a year. Oh, and student debt totals well over a trillion (US) dollars, staff strikes and student protests have become commonplace around the world, more and more university staff are in precarious work, the number of fake journals continues to rise, Elsevier is making record profits off journals, and Laureate Education Corporation owns 60 universities outright. In this Public Lecture, Professor Raewyn Connell will invite you to think about the shape and sources of our problems, local and global; the resources (some unexpected) that we have for dealing with them; and pathways into a different future — our ideas of a good university and a good university system, and how we can move towards them. These are themes of Raewyn’s new book The Good University (Monash University Publishing 2019, in Australia and Aotearoa/New Zealand, and Zed Books internationally). Raewyn, one of Australia's leading social scientists, is Professor Emerita at the University of Sydney and a life member of the National Tertiary Education Union.
