Migration in India: Policy Challenges (10:30 AM)

Over a hundred million internal migrants within India and millions of emigrants and immigrants from and to India shape the complex dynamic landscape of migration in the world’s largest democracy. What are the policy challenges in dealing with these vast migrations? In this seminar, Dr Tumbe maps out the geography of ongoing migrations, their brief histories, past policies and ongoing debates in securing safe and rewarding migrations. He highlights similarities and differences in approaches towards internal and international migration in India and the structural features of the labour market that can constrain the gains from migration, the need for portability of social security benefits and the possibilities of integrating migration firmly in India’s developmental agenda in the near future.

Discussion on new Book India Moving: A History of Migration (12:00 PM)

India Moving: A History of Migration explains when, how and why people have moved to, from and within the Indian subcontinent over centuries. It reveals one of the world’s largest, longest and on-going episodes of labour migration, referred to as the Great Indian Migration Wave, and its significance in modern Indian history. It provides a new perspective on the migration of business communities both within and outside India. Finally, it provides a perspective on migration and development, in history and in 21st century India.
