Advancing interdisciplinary research to inform policy
Located in Australia’s most multilingual city, with one of Australia’s largest concentrations of language and education researchers, we are ideally placed to take the lead in multilingualism research.
The Multilingualism Research Collective aims to:
- deepen understanding of the diversity and specificity of multilingualism in its social and historical contexts
- evaluate the impact of multilingualism on communities, social identities and life experiences
- explore the cultural and affective significance of languages to the communities that know and use them
- investigate formal and informal language learning and teaching processes and their impact on multilingual lives.
We take a broad view of multilingualism that accommodates language acquisition, attrition and revival, as well as varying degrees of multilingual competence and varied language repertoires.
Research streams
We have six streams under which we conduct research:
- Australian Indigenous languages
- English in a multilingual society
- geographies of multilingualism
- language learning and use in the community
- multilingualism in social and professional life
- multilingualism, technologies and literacies in education.
