About the seminar

Over the past decade, acute kidney injury (AKI) has become a global priority for improving patient safety and health outcomes. AKI is a common clinical syndrome that is characterised by a sudden reduction in kidney function over hours or days. AKI complicates around 6% of all hospital admissions, and is associated with poor health outcomes in terms of high rates of unplanned rehospitalisation, development or progression of chronic kidney disease, and premature mortality.

In order to tackle the harm associated with AKI, NHS England established the national Think Kidneys Programme (https://www.thinkkidneys.nhs.uk/). Through patient safety directives, a key focus has been the mandatory introduction of clinical decision support systems within all acute NHS trusts to improve the detection, alerting and response to AKI.

Dr Blakeman will provide an overview of regional and national programmes of work targeting AKI to improve patient safety.
