Professor Jeffrey Braithwaite delivers keynote address at HFESA 2017 Conference
AIHI founding director Professor Jeffrey Braithwaite has delivered the keynote address at the 2017 Human Factors and Ergonomics Society of Australia (HFESA) Conference held at the University of Wollongong from 26-29 November 2017.
Professor Braithwaite spoke on patient safety, stating that “Rates of harm seem to have flatlined with one in ten patients experiencing harm while in hospital.” He told the conference that 40% of care delivered in hospitals was not in line with research evidence or recommended practice.
Professor Braithwaite urged delegates to consider “It’s not really feasible to reduce the number of incidents by further increasing bureaucracy.” He pointed instead to learning from incidents that result in a positive outcome for patients and applying lessons learned.
The 2017 conference focus is on the sustainability of healthcare – building a system that is long-lasting and productive over time as well as optimising human well-being and systems performance.
