Macquarie’s AIHI to establish state-of-the-art centre for excellence in oncology research and implementation science

Professor Jeffrey Braithwaite, Founding Director of the Australian Institute of Health Innovation at Macquarie University, has secured a $2.5 million grant for the creation of a highly innovative, nationally-important centre for excellence in oncology and implementation science.

Under the grant, awarded by the National Health and Medical Research Council, Professor Braithwaite will lead a team of internationally regarded researchers over five years to generate substantial gains in oncology research and transform knowledge into effective care.

Professor Braithwaite indicated: “The new Centre for Research Excellence in Implementation Science in Oncology (CRE-ISO) responds to the pressing need to energise cancer research and care.” Cancer is the leading cause of death among Australians and the number of new cases is predicted to reach 150,000 per year by 2020. “We recognise this imposes a substantial cost to the Australian economy and places a burden of suffering on individuals,” said Professor Braithwaite.

Centred on care provided at Liverpool and Prince of Wales Hospitals, the research projects under the banner of the CRE will aim to publish ground-breaking research while also guiding the development of practices for the implementation of findings in order to deliver effective care to those who need it. For Professor Braithwaite, “Implementation science is particularly concerned with capturing evidence produced by research and turning it into on-the-ground, effective practices for individuals, organisations and systems”. Researchers will work side-by-side with clinicians, policy makers and patients.

Another key focus of the Centre will be to develop the next generation of researchers and leaders in implementation science in oncology. “We aim to create a dynamic, receptive and responsive health and medical workforce in this emerging field,” said Professor Braithwaite.

With an international reputation for producing high quality research evidence to support health services change and improvement, Professor Braithwaite and the Australian Institute of Health Innovation are honoured to lead the team which includes:

Professor Robyn Ward, AM, University of Queensland
Professor David Currow, Flinders University
Professor Geoff Delaney, Liverpool Hospital
Professor Richard Kefford, AM, Macquarie University
Professor, Ian Olver, AM, University of South Australia
