Professor Johanna Westbrook to chair at Parliament House

Expert panel on universal healthcare

Professor Johanna Westbrook will chair a panel discussion on universal healthcare at the inaugural John Deeble lecture at Parliament House, Canberra, on Friday 18 October 2019.

The panel will include:

  • Professor Ian Frazer AC FRS, CEO and Director, The Translational Research Institute, University of Queensland; Co-inventor HPV Vaccine; Australian of the Year 2006
  • Hon. Nicola Roxon, Chair, HESTA; Minister for Health and Aging 2007–2011; Attorney-General 2011–2013
  • Mr Romlie Mokak, Indigenous Policy Evaluation Commissioner, Productivity Commission; Chief Executive, Lowitja Institute 2014–2018; Chief Executive, Australian Indigenous Doctors’ Association 2005–2014.

The expert panel will discuss how health policy can be shaped to ensure better access and equity for all Australians.

Prior to the panel discussion, Professor Nigel Edwards, CEO, Nuffield Trust, United Kingdom, will deliver a lecture on “Why good health policy goes bad—and how to fix it.”

Professor Westbrook is Director of the Centre for Health Systems and Safety Research, Australian Institute of Health Innovation, Macquarie University. She is internationally recognised for her research evaluating the effects of information and communication technology in healthcare.

Professor Westbrook recently provided evidence at the Royal Commission in Aged Care Quality and Safety and has been awarded a National Health and Medical Research Council grant to create a digital dashboard to enhance services for people in residential and community aged care.

The John Deeble Lecture has been established by the Australian Healthcare and Hospitals Association.
