We are proud to be the only institution in Australia with a 40-year history of fieldwork, research and teaching in ancient Egyptian language, history, visual culture and archaeology.

Our mission is generously supported by the members of the Rundle Foundation for Egyptian Archaeology.

About us

Since 1980 the Macquarie teams, formed of staff and students, have worked annually on a number of important sites including Thebes, Saqqara and Giza. Excavations are joint Australian-Egyptian projects in conjunction with the Supreme Council of Antiquities of the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities (MoTA).

With ancient Egyptian monuments suffering increasing deterioration as a result of well-known human and geographic factors, the need is pressing for more international cooperation to rescue this important human heritage. Australia is well equipped to play a significant role in this endeavour.

Are you interested in learning about Ancient Egypt? Macquarie University is the only university in Australia with an undergradate to PhD level program in the discipline. Egyptology is integral to the Bachelor of History degree offered by the School of Humanities.

Get involved with us

The Australian Centre for Egyptology (ACE) and the Rundle Foundation for Egyptian Archaeology organises a wide range of educational activities and events for students and members of the public alike, including:

• the annual research conference featuring international keynote speakers
• regular free in-person and online lectures
• other centre events to meet fellow enthusiasts of ancient Egypt
• a mini-conference recapturing the previous season's excavation work in Egypt.
