An exciting opportunity is available for a highly motivated and qualified PhD candidate to join a large collaborative project that will facilitate best practice species selection to create diverse and resilient urban green spaces across Australia.
The Which Plant Where Project (WPW) is a five-year program that brings together a consortium of researchers, government agencies, industry partners and nursery growers. The collaborative team will align science with industry experience to develop tools and resources that will facilitate optimal plant selection for urban green spaces across Australia, while providing multiple co-benefits for our cities and its inhabitants.
The PhD student will investigate traits of horticultural species in relation to ecosystem processes and services, such as fire risk mitigation, water and carbon cycles, and microclimates. The results will contribute to our fundamental understanding of plant functional traits, and how traits can be used to improve species selection for urban green spaces.
Applications are only open to Australian or New Zealand citizens or permanent residents of Australia. The student will be based within the Department of Biological Sciences at Macquarie University and will work under the supervision of Professor Michelle Leishman, Dr Alessandro Ossola and Dr Rachael Gallagher. The student will be expected to commence in 2019.
Interested students should contact Professor Michelle Leishman (firstname.lastname@example.org) or Dr Alessandro Ossola (email@example.com) before submitting an online application. Please provide a 1 page statement of research interests, current resume, academic transcripts and two academic referee reports.
