What you will study

The BPhil/MRes program consists of 32 credit points in Year 1 and 32 credit points in Year 2. Students have access to a range of units from a variety of subject areas across the University. This allows the construction of a program relevant to your specific interests, subject to academic approval. Domestic students may study part-time, but part-time students will not be eligible for the stipend.

Year One

Year 1 units are advanced undergraduate coursework including study of research frontiers in the discipline.

  • 6 x 4 credit point units of advanced disciplinary content
  • 1 x 4 credit point Research Communications unit
  • 1 x 4 credit point Research Frontiers unit, where candidates survey the key ground-breaking and innovative research issues in their field.

Candidates who successfully complete the requirements of Year 1 of the program and decide not to continue into Year 2 will be awarded a Bachelor of Philosophy (BPhil).

Candidates who complete the requirements of the BPhil at a satisfactory level and would like to continue into Year 2 will be offered a place in the Master of Research with advanced standing for the study undertaken in the BPhil, and will not be awarded a BPhil.

Year Two

Year 2 units are at the Masters postgraduate program level specialising in research preparation and experience in a specific research topic at the sub-discipline level.

The Year 2 program is based around five core activities:

  • Research Frontiers 2
  • Literature Review
  • Research Methods
  • Research Planning
  • Thesis (20,000 words) based on a small research project

Since research varies in different fields, each department has a program based on its own practices and style.

On successful completion of the two-year program, candidates will be awarded the Master of Research degree.
