Safe handling of hazardous chemicals

Some chemicals used on the University campus, including specialised scientific substances, may present hazards to individuals, property and/or the environment. We restrict the procurement, use and disposal of these chemicals.

Our chemical safety measures include:

  • keeping a detailed inventory of all chemicals on campus
  • notifying regulatory bodies of dangerous goods including hazardous chemicals
  • using ChemAlert to obtain safety information on chemicals and print labels for containers
  • requiring staff and students who handle chemicals to:
    • complete an induction on hazardous chemical safety
    • carry out safety assessments before using a chemical
    • know about the procedures in case of a spill or incident
  • collecting chemical waste in properly labelled containers and disposing of them at a dedicated waste compound.
