The new NCGP
The ARC is transitioning to a revitalised National Competitive Grants Program (NCGP), as detailed in the Policy Review Final Report.
Existing schemes will continue during the transition as outlined on the ARC scheme calendar.
The new NCGP will be reduced from 15 to 7 schemes, with a structure that will support capacity-building and research at various scales. New schemes will open gradually over 2027 and 2028.
Information on the new schemes, their structure, indicative funding levels and scope are provided in Part 3 of the Final Report, with more details on key dates, eligibility, assessment criteria and selection process to be released in advance of each scheme opening.

Legacy NCGP - Fellowships
The Australian Laureate Fellowships scheme reflects the Australian Government’s commitment to excellence in research by supporting world-class researchers to conduct research in Australia.
The Discovery Early Career Researcher Award (DECRA) scheme provides focused research support for early career researchers in both teaching and research, and research-only positions.
Future Fellowships reflect the Australian Government’s commitment to excellence in research by supporting excellent mid-career researchers to undertake high quality research in areas of national and international benefit.
The Industry Fellowships Program (IFP) is a suite of three fellowship schemes under the ARC’s Linkage Program. The schemes create a pathway to support academic researchers in establishing careers in industry, and industry-based researchers to work in university settings, with the aim of increased two-way mobility and skill-building in research collaboration, translation and commercialisation.
Legacy NCGP - Grants
ARC Centres of Excellence are prestigious focal points of expertise through which high-quality researchers maintain and develop Australia’s international standing in research areas of national priority.
The Discovery Indigenous scheme provides grant funding to support research projects led by an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander researcher.
The Discovery Projects scheme provides grant funding to support research projects that may be undertaken by individual researchers or research teams.
The Industrial Transformation Research Hubs scheme engages Australia’s best researchers in issues facing the new industrial economies and training the future workforce.
The Industrial Transformation Training Centres scheme fosters close partnerships between university-based researchers and other research end-users to provide innovative Higher Degree by Research and postdoctoral training, for end-user focused research industries that are vital to Australia’s future.
The Linkage Infrastructure, Equipment and Facilities scheme provides funding for research infrastructure, equipment and facilities to eligible organisations.
The Linkage Program promotes national and international research partnerships between researchers and business, industry, community organisations and other publicly funded research agencies.
Special Research Initiatives (SRI) fund new fields of research to improve Australia’s global competitiveness.
