You're on mute!

Have you ever been on a call and told somebody “You’re on mute!” It can feel uncomfortable, sometimes embarrassing and even isolating.

Now imagine how it feels when other people constantly seem to be on mute.  And imagine the isolation felt by 466 million people worldwide. That’s the number of people living with disabling hearing loss, according to the World Health Organisation. Without intervention, it's estimated to be more than 900 million people by 2050.

This World Hearing Day, we’re asking you to support our research at Macquarie University Hearing, where we’re transforming hearing health for us all, and helping people with hearing loss to re-join the hearing world.

Adjusting to hearing loss is a journey that many struggle with. We’re wired for connection, so a loss of hearing doesn’t just dull the sounds of the world around us; it decreases our ability to communicate with others, engage with our community and interact with our environment. It affects our health and wellbeing acutely, and it’s incredibly isolating. That’s why research into hearing health is so important.

Our research means that people like Mary Lambell, a patient at the MQ Health, Speech and Hearing Clinic, can re-join the hearing world, manage her lifelong hearing loss and connect with those she loves, and continue to enjoy the arts.

That’s the transformative power of improving hearing health, and why we’re committed to research and innovative solutions that will benefit millions of people living with hearing loss in Australia and worldwide.

Many people are surprised to learn that hearing loss in midlife is the biggest modifiable risk factor for dementia in later life. That’s the kind of research we can further with your kind donation, but hearing health affects us all, whatever our age. Please support the Macquarie University Hearing Fund.

Here at Macquarie University Hearing, we’re not just working toward better hearing for our patients. We’re improving their health and wellbeing. Our research helps people of all ages and backgrounds receive the care they need to live fully in a hearing world. Whether it's yourself, a parent or partner you’re concerned about, a child or student, hearing health affects us all, impacting our sense of connectedness and our ability to be part of the world around us.

Join with us to make life better for people like Mary. We want everyone to be able to connect with the world around them, enjoy the sound of their grandkids playing, chat with their friends in a restaurant, and re-join the hearing world. Simple things that make us human, and help keep us connected to those around us.
