Tackling real-world challenges in cyber security

The Optus Macquarie University Cyber Security Hub is a $10 million joint investment, which promotes a unique interdisciplinary approach in cyber security.



One-third of Australian businesses have experienced cybercrime, resulting in business disruption, loss of information and revenue, as well as damage to reputation and even equipment.

The frequency and cost of cyber breaches are increasing rapidly in line with the growing number and sophistication of cyberattacks. Each year, cybercrime costs Australia more than $1 billion.

  • Providing expertise and leadership in cyber security regarding technology, governance, policies and human factors.
  • Offering a platform for exchange between academics and practitioners from business and government.
  • Conducting cross-cutting research across several disciplines: computing, engineering, business, criminology, law and psychology.
  • Training the next generation of cybersecurity specialists as well as raising awareness among our leaders and developing the skills of the existing workforce.
  • Working to develop commercial technology solutions for cybersecurity challenges.
  • Data: Delivering trustworthy data analytics, and manage risks and prevent digital frauds.
  • Technology: Building ethical cyber solutions, and engage with government, compliance bodies and regulatory policy development.
  • Systems: Building secure and resilient software, and develop cross jurisdictions cyber-resilient systems.
  • People: Improving cyber security-related behaviours.
