Macquarie University has again been ranked as a leading institution in the highly regarded 2017 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), being named within the top 200 universities worldwide.

The pioneering research discoveries and acclaimed academic programs at Macquarie have led the University also be recognised as one of the top universities in Australia, ranked within the 9-10 band.

Macquarie also joins other leading universities in the Asia-Pacific that appear within the top 200 in the world.

Professor David Wilkinson, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Corporate Engagement and Advancement) said it was pleasing to see Macquarie’s scores had improved again in these key rankings.

“While international ranking systems are only one indicator of performance we are pleased to see Macquarie’s global standing and reputation rise, reflecting the high calibre of our researchers, our international appeal and industry collaboration – the Incubator and the Macquarie Park Innovation District are key examples of this. These strengths will continue to put us in a great position for future positive performance.”

ARWU adopts six objective indicators to rank world universities, including the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, the number of Highly Cited Researchers, the number of articles published in the journals Nature and Science, the number of articles indexed in Science Citation Index – Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index, and per capita performance.

Professor Sakkie Pretorius, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) said Macquarie’s ranking was recognition not only of Macquarie’s past exceptional research performance but of Macquarie’s potential across a diverse set of research disciplines.

“Macquarie’s varied research strengths – from environmental and biological sciences, archeology and astronomy, to quantum physics, clinical sciences and philosophy – will do much to address some of the most pressing global issues.”

Published annually since 2003, the ARWU is a widely referenced ranking of the world’s research universities.

More than 1200 universities worldwide are assessed by ARWU every year, and the best 500 universities are published.
