Medal for Macquarie University education alumni

Dr Warren Marks, who pursued his PhD with Norman McCulla, Senior Lecturer from the Department of Education, and now partners annually with Macquarie University via his Leading Educators around the Planet (LEAP) program, was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the recent Australia Day Honours list.

It is a great achievement for Warren personally recognising his services to education, and great recognition for our profession. His other accomplishments include:

  • Teacher, Deputy Principal and Principal (13 years) NSW Department of Education (1965-2004)

  • NSW Leadership Initiatives Director, NSW DE (2000-2003)

  • Principal Support Officer, NSWDE (2004)

  • Senior Officer Leadership Strategy, NSWDE (2005-2006)

  • Senior Interviewer in Abu Dhabi, NSWDE (2007)

  • Senior Officer Teacher Exchange Programs, NSWDE (2007-2009)


Post NSWDE accomplishments (2009-2016)

  • Designed and Director of LEAP NSW Pty Ltd (Leading Educators Around the Planet) which is a NSW-based international peer-shadowing program for educational leaders from NSW and Canada, Finland, USA, England and Ireland

  • Lecturer and Academic Coordinator, Victorian DET (BASTOW) “Leading Instructional Practice” program (2012-2015)

  • Lecturer, Masters in Instructional Leadership, University of Melbourne (2012-current)

  • Lecturer, Professional Certificate in Instructional Leadership (University of Melbourne) in Western Australia, Victoria and NSW (2013-2016)

  • Lecturer and Academic Coordinator, ACT Aspiring Leaders Program (2015)

  • Lecturer and Academic Coordinator Victorian DET (BASTOW) “Leading Pedagogy Program” (2016-2019)

  • NSW Department of Education & NSW Primary Principals Leadership Research Award (2002/2003)

  • Australian College of Educators Outstanding Achievement in Education Medal (Wollongong Chapter, 2003)

  • NSW Primary Principals Association Life Membership (2004)

  • Australian Council for Educational Leaders (ACEL) Leadership Awards (2012)

  • Australian Council for Educational Leaders National Fellowship (2014)

  • Australian College of Educators National Fellowship (2014)

  • Order of Australia Medal (OAM) for Services to Education (2016)


Contributions to educational leadership

  • Designed and implemented educational leadership programs within NSW for NSWDE; and internationally through LEAP (Leading Educators Around the Planet)

  • Presented on educational leadership research and programs at international conferences (Paris, Singapore, Boston, Ontario, Helsinki)

  • Completed a doctorate in Educational Leadership (Macquarie University) and have published several peer-reviewed articles
