Macquarie University has once again been ranked as a leading institution in the 2015 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU).

Published annually since 2003, the ARWU is a widely referenced and influential ranking of the world’s research universities. The pioneering research discoveries and respected academic programs at Macquarie led the university to be recognised as one of the 10 best universities in Australia. It joins 47 other leading universities in the Asia-Pacific that appear within the top 300 in the world.

Six indicators are used to calculate the ranking (also referred to as the Shanghai Jiao Tong ranking), including:

  • number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals,

  • number of highly cited researchers selected by Thomson Scientific,

  • number of articles published in journals of Nature and Science,

  • number of articles indexed in Science Citation Index – Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index,

  • and per capita performance with respect to size of the institution.

More than 1200 universities worldwide are assessed by ARWU every year, and the best 500 universities are published.
