Uni not just for school leavers: getting back on course

11 March 2015

Whether travelling, working, raising a family or studying at another institution, there are many reasons why students might choose to enter University long after leaving school. Macquarie University’s upcoming Central Coast non school applicant events are the perfect place to learn about new opportunities for further education.

Nearly 50 per cent of Macquarie’s undergraduates don’t come directly from high school, so the University has tailored a flexible environment to suit a range of students, such as Tuggerah Lakes mother Sarah Mills.

Initially qualified as a naturopath, Sarah worked in retail pharmacy until she discovered a passion for education after having children of her own.

Sarah completed a Bachelor of Science with a Diploma of Education at Macquarie in 2014 and is now successfully employed as a Secondary Science Teacher at Tuggerah Lakes Secondary College.

“It’s amazing to be in my chosen career so soon after graduation,” Sarah says. “I chose Macquarie because of its high reputation globally, the wide range of facilities (including daycare), flexible study options and the location”.

Making the decision to return to study can be challenging, but Sarah relied on a strong work ethic to make the transition.

“Determination, hard work, and a firm belief in who you are will allow you to overcome any obstacle,” says Sarah.  “Studying is not only personally satisfying but you gain employability skills and knowledge that will lead you to a satisfying and rewarding career.”

“Trophies can break and paper certificates can fade, but the way you feel when you achieve something after much time and perseverance is inside you and cannot be taken away.”

The events, held at The Entrance and Gosford, will also share valuable information about the ‘nuts and bolts’ of university, including flexible study opportunities, travel options, application information, and fees and support services.
