In a coup for the local sporting community, Macquarie University was recently selected by the Korea Republic national football team, the Taegeuk Warriors, as their base to prepare for the AFC Asian Cup 2015.

In the evening of Monday 5 January, an on-campus open training session will mark the team’s final day of preparations, and keen fans can witness the world-class players in action.

The team will arrive in Sydney on 28 December and train for nine days at Macquarie University’s Sport Fields as they prepare for the biggest football tournament ever held in Australia.

“Macquarie University are delighted to invite the community to join us on 5 January to watch one of the best football teams in the world in their final training session,” said General Manager of Sport and Recreation at Macquarie University, Cindy Hoad.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for fans to see the team live and up close before they head to Canberra to compete in their first match of the AFC Asian Cup.”

Minister for Citizenship and Communities and Member for Ryde Victor Dominello said having Korea Republic set up camp in Ryde was a great boost for the local community.

“There are many members of the Korean-Australian community who will be very excited that the team has chosen our community to prepare for this very important tournament,” Mr Dominello said.

The team will also play a friendly match against Saudi Arabia at Parramatta’s Pirtek Stadium on 4 January.
