Macquarie University statement regarding hostage situation in Sydney CBD

Macquarie University is not aware of the involvement of any of its staff or students in today's unfolding hostage situation occurring in the Sydney CBD.

However, as a security precaution, the York St building housing Macquarie University’s City Campus has been ‘locked down’ and all classes are cancelled this afternoon.

Police are suggesting people remain in buildings; however, if students or staff wish to leave they are advised to stay away from Martin Place and check the transport links provided below for transport updates.

Current transport advice is that:

  • Buses in the Sydney CBD are diverting due to a police operation.

  • Passengers are advised to avoid the Sydney CBD or expect extensive delays.

  • Buses are following the direction of police on site and may change their route at short notice.

  • Additionally, Buses travelling to the city across the Sydney Harbour Bridge are terminating at North Sydney, buses travelling citybound across the Anzac Bridge are terminating at the Queen Victoria Building, except route 501, it is terminating at Central, and buses entering the city from the Eastern Suburbs are terminating at Hyde Park.


The University urges any concerned friends or family to contact their loved ones directly and to follow official information sources.
