Macquarie Law School alumnus and Clayton Utz Partner Mr Stuart Clark has been elected as the Law Council of Australia’s President-elect for 2015, to serve as President in 2016.

Mr Clark, who graduated in 1980 as part of Macquarie’s first graduating cohort of law students, is the first Macquarie alumnus to serve in the role.

“I am honoured to take up this position,” says Clark, “the Law Council of Australia is the national voice of the profession nationally and its international representative.”

“As a Macquarie graduate, I continue to think about how the law operates, the impact it has on our society and why - not just about what the law is. I think these attributes, honed during my time at the School, will be vital in this new position."

"I plan to focus on the role of lawyers in Australia and in our region. I'm looking forward to pursuing opportunities for Australian lawyers to work with our colleagues throughout the region in both developing their practices and strengthening the rule of law."

Professor Natalie Klein, Dean of the Macquarie Law School, is excited to have one of the School’s alumni serving in such an important role in the legal community.

“Mr Clark is amongst the University’s most distinguished alumni”, says Klein. “We highly value his ongoing connections with the Law School, including his Adjunct Professorship, and have greatly appreciated his support of the School and its students.”

Mr Clark recently hosted a distinguished cohort of fellow alumni at a Macquarie Law School Luncheon. Guests included the New South Wales Director of Public Prosecutions, two Chief Judges, numerous partners from leading law firms, distinguished barristers and a number of young outstanding Law School graduates who are already making their mark in the legal field.

“The luncheon provided a terrific opportunity to connect with fellow graduates and remind us all of the diversity and sheer calibre of those in our alumni community,” said Mr Clark. “In such a broad profession it can be difficult to know which of your colleagues came from where – so it was invaluable to refresh these important Macquarie connections with both recent and distinguished alumni.”

Mr Clark’s election was announced at the Law Council’s November meeting.
