The Australian Academy of Science yesterday announced that five of Australia’s leading scientists, including Macquarie’s Professor Sue O’Reilly, will join its Council in 2015.

The council has overall responsibility for managing the Academy, and is made up of 17 members from a diverse range of disciplines across the physical and biological sciences who are elected by the Fellowship.

Professor Sue O’Reilly is elected to the Council to represent the physical sciences.

"This is a wonderful opportunity to contribute further to Academy activities in promoting science nationally where opportunities arise, such as the geoscience UNCOVER initiative, the working party on the importance of the core science disciplines to economic growth in Australia and many others," says Professor O'Reilly.

"I am also passionate about encouraging young to mid-career scientists, and anticipate expanding my activities in that area from the ARC Centre of Excellence for Core to Crust Fluid Systems where seven mid-career scientists have been mentored to Future Fellowships since 2010."

The new Council members will formally take up their positions after the 2015 Annual General Meeting that will be held in May as part of the Academy’s annual three day celebration of science, Science at the Shine Dome.

“It’s fantastic to see these top Australian scientists contributing time in their extraordinarily busy schedules to assist the Academy to achieve its mission,” said the Academy’s President, Professor Andrew Holmes.

“Each of them brings a wealth of experience that will undoubtedly help the Academy to champion excellence in Australian science,” he said.
