In a culmination of ongoing visits with the LEAP Auburn Community of Schools program throughout 2014, 42 year 5 and 6 students from Auburn North Public School arrived at Macquarie University on May 27th, 2014 for a fun-filled, informative and interactive campus visit before the ‘Invention Convention’ finale of the Young Einstein Program.

The Invention Convention, hosted at Auburn North Public School, saw the students engage in a range of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) activities, introducing them to the world of inventions. At the end of the 10 Week program, groups of students engaged in the invention of a new product, a new ‘something’.

“Their group had to come up with a poster explaining their ‘something’, a presentation which they present to a panel of judges and then a prototype,” says project coordinator Mo Bremner. “Our judges panel included Rhonda Davies from the Art Gallery and Donna Heemi from the LEAP team, as well as AP Mark Marciniak from Granville Boys High School and Head of Science at Auburn Girls High School, Belinda Diamond.”

This group of students has also been fortunate to engage with other adventures on campus. In May, students got up close and personal with native animals from Walkabout Wildlife, visited the University’s mobile planetarium in E7B to view the night sky and experienced an exciting science show demonstration by Professor Joanne Jamie and her team.

They also visited Macquarie University’s Art Gallery to view the award-winning “Affinities 7 Museums, 50 Objects” exhibition. They even created their own artwork, seeking inspiration from the exhibition under the careful instruction of Kate Hargraves, Rhonda Davies and Leonard Janiszewski.

Throughout the year the LEAP team have helped students investigate great minds from our past, explore different design processes, solve a range of invention scenarios and develop innovative designs.

Feedback from last year’s Invention Convention included:
"Deep inside I am a true and creative inventor"
"I loved being in this group"
"I am capable of making an invention and now I know what to do"

The LEAP Auburn Community of Schools Project is funded under the Australian Government’s Higher Education Participation and Partnerships Program (HEPPP) and aims to increase participation in Higher Education by students from low socio-economic status (SES) backgrounds who are traditionally underrepresented.

“The Young Einstein’s Program has assisted these students in inspiring them to think about the opportunities that tertiary education can offer them. We look forward to seeing these budding scientists in action one day,” said Bremner.
