A team of Macquarie University researchers have been selected to partner with an international line-up of universities to develop future wireless technologies, increasingly referred to as “5G”.

The team, lead by Professor Eryk Dutkiewicz, are the only Australians involved in the three-year, multi-million dollar program with industry sponsors led by Intel.

“We’re excited to be collaborating with such a prestigious group of internationally-recognised institutions who are investigating candidate technologies for 5G, including solutions for the impending shortage of radio spectrum, or ‘wireless crunch’,” said Professor Dutkiewicz.

“Although the full scope of the 5G technologies has yet to be defined, the research project at Macquarie University will aim to develop innovative solutions for addressing the 1000-fold increase in capacity needed for future mobile communication networks.”

Professor Dutkiewicz’s team will present their ongoing work at an annual workshop event in California, United States, later this year.  The event brings together university researchers and serves as a forum for sharing research ideas and results.

Other universities involved in the project include the University of Southern California, New York University, Princeton University, Stanford University, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, University of Texas at Austin, University Fabra Pompeu, Purdue University, Cornell University, IIT Delhi, the University of California at Los Angeles and Rice University.

Candidate 5G technologies, once selected and standardised, are expected to become commercially deployable around 2020.

Macquarie University has a proud history in modern electronics, particularly in semiconductor and microcircuitry. Researchers at Macquarie University played a critical role in the initial development of wireless networking, helping to translate WiFi into a prototype for a commercial integrated circuit.
