Macquarie University Sports Scholar Larissa Tichon recently travelled to Melbourne to compete in the 24 hour National Championships for Ultra Marathon Running and ran a staggering 202km to secure three Australian under 25 records.

This event was Larissa’s opportunity to truly showcase her endurance and physical stamina, being the only event that she has competed in that exceeds her previous 180km personal best.

As the day progressed, Larissa maintained a good running pace, with the afternoon bringing some respite from the heat experienced earlier in the day. Issues arose when she began to experience pain in her right Achilles, which gradually increased to the point where she was at risk of a major injury.

After a 15 minute massage Larissa resumed running, and reached the 100km mark in 11 hours. Despite her pain, Larissa continued by reducing her speed and taking several massage breaks. Larissa drew strength from religion, along with vast amounts of carbohydrates and water.

With 6.5km to go in the last hour, Larissa ran past her support crew grinning from ear to ear, knowing she had made the 200km mark.

After 24 gruelling hours, Larissa completed an incredible 202.028km and is absolutely thrilled with her achievement, stating - “I knew I had to keep going and push through the pain. I never thought I would break 3 records in the process!”
