New partnership between Cancer Institute and Sport and Aquatic Centre

This February the Macquarie University Cancer Institute (MCI) will launch a new partnership with Macquarie University Sport, to co-host a suite of well-known programs for local cancer survivors throughout 2014.

The partnership will kick off on Friday February 14, with a new term of the YWCA’s Encore exercise program.  Places in the popular program are filling fast, but local women are still encouraged to apply, with waitlist options and a second term later in the year.

“We’re thrilled to have the Macquarie University Sport team on board with us to launch this first term of Encore,” says MCI Director Professor John Boyages. “It’s a tremendous privilege to be chosen by the YWCA as the first Ryde district site for this very successful program.”

The free eight-week Encore program supports the physical well-being of women after the trauma of breast cancer surgery or treatment in a nurturing and supportive environment, whether that surgery was a few months ago or 20 years ago. Based on the latest research, the program is tailored for all fitness levels and abilities and incorporates land and hydrotherapy exercises.

The new partnership between the MCI and Macquarie University Sport is part of a broader Life after Cancer Experience initiative (LACE), which has already launched the MCI’s successful Advanced Lymphoedoema Clinical Care and Research Program.

After February, the full 2014 LACE program will extend to a year’s schedule of free public sessions, including:

May and September:
Living well after cancer sessions

3-hour sessions co-hosted by the NSW Cancer Council, with practical information and discussion for cancer survivors, carers, family post treatment

August – September:
Enrich program

Co-hosted Cancer Council program, with exercise and nutrition sessions co-facilitated by dieticians, exercise physiologists, physiotherapists

October December:
Second term of Encore program with YWCA NSW
