Macquarie University maintains strong position in world university rankings

Macquarie University has maintained its strong position in the world's top 300 universities, as published in the Academic Rankings of World Universities (ARWU) for 2013, announced yesterday.

Macquarie retains its place alongside the University of Adelaide as the eighth highest-ranking Australian institution.

Published annually since 2003, the ARWU is a widely-referenced and influential ranking of the world's research universities. It ranks more than 1000 universities, with the top 500 published at www.shanghairanking.com/index.html

It is compiled using indicators including:
• number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals
• number of highly cited researchers selected by Thomson Scientific
• number of articles published in journals of Nature and Science
• number of articles indexed in Science Citation Index - Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index
• per capita performance with respect to the size of an institution.
