Macquarie University Vice-Chancellor Professor S. Bruce Dowton said today the release of the Australian university sector’s first ever detailed higher education policy agenda “A Smarter Australia” is an important first step in ensuring that the central role of universities in Australia’s future is recognised.

Professor Dowton commended the statement to all political parties as they go about developing their respective policies positions on higher education in the lead up to the federal election this year.

“Universities have always been drivers of change and central to ensuring the nation’s future prosperity. However, we need to do better as a nation if we are to realise the full potential of our higher education system. A Smarter Australia provides a roadmap for a smarter, stronger and more prosperous Australia,” he said.

A Smarter Australia calls for a partnership between the university sector and government to establish a practical and pragmatic policy framework around four key themes.

  • Increasing Australians’ university participation

  • Developing Australia’s globally engaged sector

  • A powerful research and innovation system that drives economic and social progress

  • Increasing investment, improving efficiency and reducing red tape

A Smarter Australia outlines a policy and investment framework that will, if pursued by universities in partnership with government, unleash the full potential of Australia’s universities in driving long-term national prosperity.
