Professor Zhiming Cheng
Biography
Zhiming Cheng is Associate Dean Research Training and Performance and Professor of Economics at Macquarie Business School, where he works with colleagues to advance the graduate research program.
He has published more than 100 papers in top-tier journals across the disciplines of:
- economics
- management
- social policy.
Awards and recognition
Zhiming has been recognised nationally and internationally. He has received the:
- 2011 Australia-China Joint Action Program Award from the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia (ASSA)
- 2012 Medal for Research on Development from the Global Development Network
- 2013 Pacific Trade and Development (PAFTAD) Fellowship for Young Scholars.
He was also the:
- sole winner of the 2016 Dean's Research Excellence Award at Macquarie Business School
- recipient of the 2011 Early Career Researcher Achievement Award at the University of Wollongong.
In 2026, he received the Macquarie Business School Award for Research Excellence – Partnering for Research Impact, together with colleagues at the Health at Work Research Centre.
He has also held an Adjunct Professorship and was a UNSW Scientia Associate Professor of Economics and Social Policy at the University of New South Wales (UNSW Sydney).
Fellowships and funding
Zhiming has held prestigious fellowships, including the Jacob Wertheim Fellowship at Harvard University and a Research Fellowship at the Bank of Finland and was an elected Fellow of the Global Young Academy.
His research has been funded by, among other bodies:

- the New South Wales Department of Communities and Justice.
