Death of Major Coane

Ceylon Government Gazette: 9 January 1819

"... It is with extreme concern that we announce the death of of Major Coane of H.M. 73d Regiment which took place at Kandy on the 5th Inst. On the 18th ult. Major Coane was confined to his bed with fever at Tibotogodde in Walapane, but recovered enough to move to Kandy where he arrived on the 23d; his disorder, a remittent fever continued to increase until the latter end of the month, when it was at its worst, & his life was despaired of. His youthful & vigorous constitution protracted the struggle & about 6 days before his death many of the worst symptoms had disappeared, a favourable change seemed to have taken place & hopes were entertained of his recovery. These hopes were alas! elusive, he was seized with dysentery, & exhausted by his previous sufferings he quickly sunk under the fresh attack ..."
